Essence
Patchouli Oud is Affinessence’s dark 2015 Base Notes Collection EDP: natural-feeling patchouli, smoky oud, woods and resins presented as one dense, largely linear accord rather than a conventional pyramid.
Scent Profile
There is almost no fresh top-note preamble. Oud, old dark wood and rain-soaked earth arrive immediately, with a small peppery-citrusy lift from elemi. Patchouli soon takes the lead, reading raw, fruity, chocolatey-woody and distinctly non-dusty. The composition then softens without radically changing. Smoky, slightly medicinal oud runs through Java vetiver, labdanum, cistus, incense, guaiac wood and oakmoss. Together they make a resinous, mossy and balsamic perfume with occasional rubbery or leathery nuances. The effect is saturated and serious, closer to dark woods after rain than to sweet gourmand patchouli.
Performance
Patchouli Oud generally lasts well with a moderate trail, often opening more noticeably before settling closer to skin. It is dense rather than explosively projecting. Application should be measured, particularly in warm conditions; individual reports include both solid all-day wear and a minority who find it unexpectedly weak.
