Elizabeth and James — Nirvana Rose

Essence

Nirvana Rose is a dark, unsweetened rose built around rose de mai, geranium, and dry vetiver. It turns a familiar floral subject into something earthy and deliberately gothic.

Scent Profile

The first moments can be sharp, with vetiver arriving before the flower. A brief citrus and green-geranium brightness keeps the opening from feeling heavy. Rose de mai then settles into a winey, herbal center. Geranium amplifies the rose while vetiver supplies damp grass, roots, and a sense of shadow. The later wear stays close to this theme: dry woods, patchouli, a little musk, and an occasional leathery or saffron-like edge. It remains far from powdery or dessert-like rose styles.

Performance

It is generally long-lasting with moderate to strong diffusion. The opening can feel forceful, so a restrained application is wise, especially indoors.

Wearing Context

Cool weather, evenings, and atmospheric daytime settings are its natural territory. It reads unisex and can lean masculine through the vetiver; heat and conservative offices are less forgiving.

Comparisons & DNA

Portrait of a Lady is a useful dark-rose reference, though Nirvana Rose is simpler and more vetiver-led. Noir de Noir and Black Aoud share the shadowed-rose idea but are richer and more luxurious in texture. Stella is the revealing contrast: Nirvana Rose is darker, drier, and less conventionally romantic.

Reception

It is valued for refusing sweetness, for its strong performance, and for an unusually grounded rose at its original price. The medicinal vetiver opening is the main point of disagreement. Discontinuation has made affection for it more intense.

Versions & Reformulation

This 2016 EDP joined the Nirvana line after White and Black. It was offered as sprays and a travel rollerball. The line was later discontinued, with no documented reformulation.

Acquisition Notes

It began as an accessible designer fragrance but now appears mainly through remaining stock and resale. Rollerballs are often easier to find than full bottles, and condition deserves attention.
