Police — TO BE The King
Essence
TO BE The King is the warm, crowned entry in Police’s skull-bottle line: a 2013 Pierre-Constantin Gueros EDT built from cardamom, lavender, amber, tonka and resinous woods. It is more aromatic and evening-ready than the bottle’s novelty presentation implies.
Scent Profile
Lemon and bay leaf brighten the opening, while cardamom, nutmeg and cedar provide its spicy edge. The opening reads lively rather than sharp, with cardamom doing much of the work. Lavender and artemisia arrive over cashmere wood and amber, creating a soft aromatic warmth. In the drydown, tonka bean gives powdery sweetness to woods, resins and orange blossom. Some skin brings out a dirtier musky or mossy nuance, but the main profile remains a comfortable sweet-spicy amber.
Performance
The main limitation is modest longevity. It projects agreeably for the first part of wear, then becomes a quieter skin scent after a few hours for many people. It is best treated as an affordable fragrance to reapply before an evening plan.
Wearing Context
The King suits fall, winter, dates, bars and relaxed nights out. It is marketed masculine but its sweet lavender-amber structure can be worn by anyone who likes soft spicy orientals. The cozy style is less suited to hot weather.
Comparisons & DNA
Paco Rabanne 1 Million is the clearest crowd-pleasing spicy-sweet reference. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male explains the lavender-tonka direction, though The King is lighter and less polished. Diesel Only The Brave shares its accessible masculine designer character. Miller Harris L’Air de Rien is a much less obvious comparison, useful only for the occasional dirty-musk impression.
Reception
This is frequently treated as one of the stronger Police values: pleasant, comforting and surprisingly grown-up for the price. Critics hear synthetic sweetness, bubblegum or weak persistence. The gold-crowned skull is part of the fun for collectors and a deal-breaker for minimalists.
Versions & Reformulation
No confirmed reformulation is documented. The EDT has appeared in 40 ml, 75 ml and 125 ml bottles; other To Be flankers are separate fragrances.
Acquisition Notes
The King is inexpensive and commonly stocked. The large format is sensible for people happy to refresh it through an evening. Older bottles should be checked for freshness.
Notable Facts & Lore
