Essence
Empreinte is Courreges’ first fragrance and its great vintage chypre: peach, melon, aldehydes and strict florals over a mossy castoreum-leather base. Composed by Robert Gonnon, it feels much earthier and more adult than the house’s white-vinyl Space Age image suggests.
Scent Profile
The opening is aldehydic, bergamot-bright and herbal, with coriander, artemisia and peach leading into a distinctive peach-melon signature. Iris, jasmine and rose form a dry, unromantic floral heart. The base is the reason collectors care: oakmoss, castoreum, patchouli, cedar, sandalwood and amber making a supple animalic leather chypre. It develops from cool fruit and herbs toward darker moss, wood and leather.
Performance
Vintage Empreinte can last well, especially in parfum or well-preserved EDT, but projection varies with concentration and bottle age. It usually reads refined and close rather than huge. Cool weather and textured fabrics help the moss-leather base bloom.
Wearing Context
Empreinte is best in autumn, winter and dressed-up settings. It feels mature, chic and slightly intimidating, though modern wearers of any gender can enjoy it if they like animalic leather chypres. It is not a casual clean fragrance and not an easy blind buy for mainstream tastes.

Empreinte belongs to the floral-animalic leather chypre family. Bandit is its sharpest cousin, harder and more bitter with a stronger leather snarl, where Empreinte softens that growl with fruit. Cabochard and Azuree are the closest siblings, both green-mossy leather chypres for a confident, mature wearer, but Empreinte runs rosier and brighter than the drier, more shadowed Azuree. Guerlain Mitsouko is the useful fruit reference: Empreinte shares its peachy chypre lineage but is drier, leathier and more animalic. The original 1970/71 Empreinte is the target: EDT and prized parfum/extrait. A 2012 reissue simplified and softened the formula, and the 2021 L’Empreinte is a different modern bergamot-patchouli-ambroxan fragrance. Name confusion is common, so version ID matters.
Acquisition Notes
Vintage bottles appear through auction and vintage sellers, with the gold-domed parfum most prized. Verify whether a listing is original Empreinte, the 2012 reissue, or the unrelated 2021 L’Empreinte. Aged top notes and storage are the main risks.
