Essence

Agar Blend is Davidoff’s 2015 Western-luxury oud entry in the Blend Collection. The dossier supports Alienor Massenet as the working perfumer attribution, while the catalog currently leaves the perfumer empty. The scent is a sweet, spice-fronted oud with cinnamon, clove, black pepper, guaiac wood, benzoin, amber, and a polished agarwood accord.

Scent Profile

The opening is loud cinnamon and clove with black pepper giving dryness and lift. A fleeting synthetic sharpness can appear, but the composition quickly moves into the wood heart. Oud and guaiac take over after the first stretch, with guaiac adding a milky, balsamic, smoky-woody texture. The drydown is sweet resinous wood: benzoin, amber, and oud. It reads honeyed and polished rather than barnyard, leathery, or deeply medicinal. The scent is mostly linear after the spicy entrance, holding a sweet oud-amber base for a long time.

Performance

Performance is strong. Longevity reaches a long evening on many wearers, and projection is above average in the first few hours before settling closer. Over-application can make the spice and sweetness heavy.

Wearing Context

Best for fall, winter, evening, formal wear, dates, and cooler weather. It is labeled unisex, but the spicy oud structure often reads masculine. With restraint, it can work in polished office settings, though it is better suited to dressed-up use.

Comparisons & DNA

Tom Ford Oud Wood is drier and more linear; Agar Blend is sweeter, denser, and more ambered. Gucci Intense Oud shares the broader polished oud family but is smokier and less honeyed. Ultra Male and 1 Million comparisons point less to smell-alike status than to the bold sweet designer register.

Reception

Reception is solid among sweet-oud fans. Praise focuses on smooth oud, strong drydown, and value when bought below inflated resale prices. Criticism focuses on synthetic opening facets, sweetness, and whether the oud is too Westernized for purists.

Versions & Reformulation

Agar Blend is a single EDP composition in the Blend Collection, alongside Leather Blend, Amber Blend, and Wood Blend. No reformulation is documented, but distribution appears limited and uneven.

Acquisition Notes

The documented format is 100 ml EDP. It was once findable at modest discount prices, but current Western availability is irregular and often much higher. Middle East retail, duty-free channels, and decants are practical routes.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Agar Blend was the second Blend Collection release.
  • The line bridges designer pricing with oud-coded luxury.
  • Its perfumer attribution is the clearest catalog discrepancy in this set.
