Rituals — Chakai
Essence
Chakai is the masculine half of Rituals’ limited 2019 “The Ritual of Chadō” collection, a Japanese-tea-garden concept by perfumer Christiane Plos built on a fresh green-aromatic accord of cardamom, bamboo and hinoki wood. Distinctive within Rituals’ largely warm and oriental catalog for being genuinely fresh and green, it earned a small but affectionate following before being discontinued.
Scent Profile
The opening is bright, green and energizing — several wearers spontaneously read a minty top in the first couple of minutes. It is crisp and clean rather than sweet, an aromatic-green start that fits the tea-garden idea.
As it settles, cardamom becomes the dominant player, sitting over a green bamboo-and-hinoki woodiness. Some wearers also detect an unlisted lavender threading through the heart, which reinforces the fresh-aromatic character.
The drydown turns slightly sweeter and a touch powdery while keeping the cardamom spice, and the fragrance is broadly linear after its first phase. A persistent minority finds that the pleasant green-herbal opening then flattens into something more synthetic or generic-woody, the main point of disagreement among wearers.
Performance
Performance is light to moderate. Longevity is modest but acceptable for a fresh green scent — on the order of four to five hours — with close, daytime projection. This is a close-wearing freshie that rewards liberal application rather than a projection monster, so apply generously if you want it to carry.
Wearing Context
A spring and summer daytime fresh-green scent. Most read it as bright and daytime-friendly with a Japanese-style green-tea edge, though a minority argue the cardamom-powder base pushes it toward evening. Marketed masculine, it has nonetheless been adopted happily by women wearers who find it blends well on skin. Best for office, casual daytime and warm weather, with a calm, meditative feel rather than a loud or seductive one.
Comparisons & DNA
- YSL La Nuit de L’Homme: the most substantive comparison — Chakai shares the fresh-top-into-cardamom-drydown theme but runs even fresher, swapping cedar for bamboo and hinoki and dropping the powderiness to read daytime.
- Rituals Chabana: its collection-mate and women’s counterpart, the lighter green-tea EDP from the same Chadō launch.
- The Ritual of Chadō body mist: the unisex green-tea, bamboo and matcha sibling within the same line.
Reception
Reception is small in volume but warm, with clear polarization on synthetic quality. Fans call it possibly Rituals’ best release for men, describing it as fresh, light and summery, special and extravagant, and several lament its discontinuation and limited run while struggling to find replacements. The recurring criticism is that the appealing green-cardamom opening degrades into something synthetic, lifeless or generic.
On value the verdict is favorable as long as expectations are tempered: a low-risk pick for fresh-green and cardamom fans if found cheaply, with the caveats being the base and, increasingly, availability.
Versions & Reformulation
Chakai was a limited-edition release within the 2019 Ritual of Chadō collection, offered as a 50 ml EDP and a 10 ml travel size, and is widely reported as discontinued though still occasionally found via Rituals outlet stock and resale. It has a women’s counterpart in Chabana and a unisex Chadō body mist. No reformulation is documented; given the limited run, the only real variant question is original-batch availability.
Acquisition Notes
A discontinued limited edition, so reliable pricing is not well established and bottles now appear mainly on the resale market, often flagged as rare. Common sizes were a 50 ml EDP and a 10 ml travel size. Authentic stock historically came from Rituals’ own stores and website and selected retailers; what remains is luck-of-the-draw at outlets or secondhand. No reliable counterfeiting or batch-code guidance exists for it.
Notable Facts & Lore
- “The Ritual of Chadō” references the Japanese tea ceremony, chadō, “the way of tea”; a chakai is specifically the shorter, informal tea gathering.
- The brand’s stated inspiration for Chakai is a stroll in a peaceful Japanese tea garden, the meditative power of diffused sunlight touching the green moss along a pond’s edge.
- Rituals is a Dutch house founded in 2000 by Raymond Cloosterman, a former Unilever executive.
- The Chadō line was a temporary, seasonal launch, and its limited status is the main piece of lore behind its small “wish I’d bought more” following.
- Chakai is unusual in Rituals’ lineup for being a genuinely fresh, green-aromatic men’s scent rather than a warm or oriental one.
