Frederic Malle — Synthetic Jungle
Essence
Synthetic Jungle is Anne Flipo’s deliberately modernised 1970s green chypre-a galbanum-basil-blackcurrant top over lily-of-the-valley, hyacinth, jasmine, and ylang-ylang, anchored by simplified oakmoss-patchouli base. The name is intentionally provocative: Malle and Flipo wanted to make a public case that synthetic materials, far from being inferior, are essential to the construction of believable “natural” effects in modern perfumery. Launched 2021 as Flipo’s first composition for the Malle line.
Scent Profile
The opening is a crack of green so vivid it reads almost as colour. Galbanum is the protagonist-sharp, resinous, vegetal, slightly bitter-and within the first sixty seconds it is joined by basil (anise-tinged, herbaceous) and a synthetic blackcurrant note that explodes with mouth-puckering tartness. This combination is the signature of the perfume’s first phase: imagine the inside of a greenhouse on a humid morning, with crushed tomato leaves and a bowl of cassis on a wooden table. Styrallyl acetate, a semi-synthetic with gardenia-like character, adds a glossy lift. The top phase is intense, almost rude, and lasts twenty to thirty minutes. The heart, thirty minutes to two hours, is where the perfume’s floral identity emerges.
Performance
Strong projection in the first hour-much louder than typical green chypres-moderating to medium for hours two through five. Sillage is generous, comparable to other heavy Malles. Excellent performance for a category that traditionally has weak longevity. Longevity: eight to twelve hours on skin, often longer on clothing.
Wearing Context
Spring and early summer, with strong shoulder-season versatility into autumn. Anytime of day. Excels in office, casual, and outdoor contexts-significantly more daytime-versatile than most heavy Malles. Reads stylish, confident, slightly retro.
Comparisons & DNA
Direct inspirations, as confirmed by Malle and Flipo in interview: Chanel No. 19 (Henri Robert, 1971) and Estee Lauder Private Collection (Lauder, 1973). Synthetic Jungle is the modernisation, with intensified blackcurrant and a polished, glossy chypre rather than the chiselled, austere mid-century version. Pierre Balmain Vent Vert (Germaine Cellier, 1947) is the deeper ancestor-the original galbanum bomb-but Vent Vert is much more aggressive, less floral.
Reception
Polarising on launch, with reception improving over time. Wearer response splits between admirers who find it a thoughtful modernisation of a lost genre and detractors who find it harsh, synthetic-smelling, or overly aggressive in the green opening. Critical reception has been broadly enthusiastic: Cafleurebon’s Emmanuelle Varron framed it as making her rethink how she would wear perfume, while The Candy Perfume Boy described it as a simplified, modernised green accord amplified with intense floralcy.
Versions & Reformulation
Renamed to Synthetic Nature in January 2024, with the brand framing the change as a new name for the same formula. The 2021-2024 Synthetic Jungle bottles and current Synthetic Nature bottles are reportedly identical compositionally; only the label name changed. Concentration is EDP throughout. No flankers.
