Tauer Perfumes — Sundowner
Essence
Sundowner is Tauer’s tobacco fragrance seen through a sunset filter: orange, cinnamon, dry cocoa, tart brown tobacco, and a smoky amber base. It is warm and inviting without becoming a syrupy gourmand.
Scent Profile
The opening is vivid: orange peel and bergamot, a complex cinnamon note, and a boozy glow that can suggest spiced rum or chocolate liqueur. A brief sour, grungy, animalic-rubbery edge may appear before the scent settles. The heart is where Sundowner becomes most distinctive. Tobacco absolute reads as brown leaf: rich, slightly briny, tart, and savory rather than candied. Dry cocoa adds powdery dark chocolate rather than melted sweetness. Rose stays quiet in the background, while cypriol and patchouli supply a resinous, subtly oud-like darkness. Later, tonka, vanilla, sandalwood, and ambergris make the scent softer and closer to the skin. Its path is clear: boozy spice, tart tobacco and cocoa, then a golden tobacco-amber finish.
Performance
Most wearers get solid longevity, with the opening projecting most strongly before the scent settles to a moderate and then intimate trail. Two sprays are generally enough. Cooler weather emphasizes cocoa; heat pushes the boozy cinnamon and amber forward.
Wearing Context
Autumn, winter, cool evenings, dates, dinners, and cozy gatherings are Sundowner’s best settings. It can work on a mild day but may feel heavy in real heat. It is unisex, though some perceive a traditional-cologne tilt. Office wear is possible after the opening in an expressive environment, not as a silent default.
Comparisons & DNA
Sundowner shares the house’s dry amber foundation with L’Air du Desert Marocain and Au Coeur du Desert, but it is sweeter, more tobacco-led, and more gourmand. Tobacco Vanille is a useful contrast: Sundowner is drier, sourer, and less vanilla-forward. A*Men Pure Havane gives a sweeter tobacco comparison, while Sundowner’s cinnamon, cocoa, and amber structure remains its own.
Reception
The response is broadly warm. Persolaise praised the perfume’s rich, evocative rendering of an Egyptian evening, and other critics have highlighted its realistic tart tobacco. Fans value its materials, its dry cocoa, and its movement from sour spice to soft amber. Reservations concern the funky opening, occasional weak tobacco or cocoa perception, and performance that can be quieter than expected. It is a good sample-first choice for anyone unsure about animalic tobacco.
Versions & Reformulation
Sundowner is a 50 ml EDP released in 2021 and still in production, with no reported juice reformulation. Tauer Attar is a separate oil fragrance, not another concentration of Sundowner.
Acquisition Notes
The fragrance is sold directly by the house and specialist retailers at artisan-niche pricing. Samples and discovery sets are widely available and make the best first step. Buy through the house or an established retailer for the straightforward route.
