Essence
Papilio is Puredistance’s butterfly fragrance: Nathalie Feisthauer’s 2023 floral extrait about metamorphosis and self-acceptance. It opens bright, tart and powdery, then turns creamy, musky, woody and quietly leathery. The second act gives it more edge than the gentle concept suggests.
Scent Profile
Bergamot gives the tart first flash. Magnolia, neroli, lily-of-the-valley, orris, hedione and heliotrope create an airy floral heart, with peach and carrot adding texture rather than obvious fruit. The drydown is where Papilio changes shape. Cedar, vetiver, ambroxan, ambrette, Muscenone, amyris, opoponax, benzoin, vanilla and cashmere musk form a creamy woody base with a suede-like leather shadow. On some skins, the vetiver-ambroxan side can suggest ashtray or stale cigarette, which is the main caution.
Performance
Papilio has very good longevity and moderate, elegant diffusion. It is not built to shout; it radiates in a controlled way and keeps revealing facets through the day. The lasting power is stronger than the delicate floral opening suggests.
Wearing Context
It is versatile and genuinely unisex despite a feminine frame. The bright top makes it easy for daytime, while the leather-woody base suits autumnal moods, cozy wear and special-but-not-formal occasions. Its emotional register is comforting and confidence-giving rather than seductive or severe.
Comparisons & DNA
Papilio follows Feisthauer’s Puredistance No. 12 and shares that layered, luminous floral manner. It is creamier, more musky and more leather-woody than No. 12. It also replaced Antonia in the rotating Magnificent XII Collection, though the olfactory link to Antonia is looser.
Reception
Reception has been warmly positive, with praise for the alive, shifting structure and elegant use of ambroxan. Dissent centers on skin chemistry: some wearers get sour, chemical, ashtray or cigarette nuances from the woody musky base. A second debate asks whether such a refined, quiet scent justifies Puredistance pricing. It is best sampled on skin.
Versions & Reformulation
Papilio launched in 2023 as a single 25% pure parfum extrait. There is no reformulation history. Its collection role is notable: it entered the Magnificent XII and moved Antonia into the house’s Private Collection while Antonia remained directly available.
