Givenchy — Gentleman Eau de Parfum Boisee
Essence
Gentleman Boisee (2020) is widely considered the most distinctive - and on many noses the best - entry in the modern Givenchy Gentleman family. Composed by Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson, it sits at the intersection of powdery iris and dry, dusty cocoa, supported by cedar, sandalwood and a polished modern patchouli. Where the 2018 EDP leans vanilla-sweet, Boisee leans woody-cocoa-dry, producing what is arguably the closest modern designer answer to Dior Homme Intense’s iris-cocoa territory. It is the compliment-magnet of the line.
Scent Profile
The opening is sharper and drier than the 2018 EDP: black pepper takes the lead, with coriander adding a green, slightly citric herbal lift and geranium a rosy-metallic top that prevents the pepper from reading purely as spice. For the first five to ten minutes Boisee is recognisably the same line as the EDP (peppery, powdery), but it diverges almost immediately as the cacao note surfaces. The cacao here is critical and frequently mischaracterised. It is not chocolate-bar gourmand; it is the dry, slightly dusty, bitter cocoa powder used in Dior Homme Intense and Lalique Encre Noire a l’Extreme - a textural note that gives the iris a powdery, edible quality without tipping into dessert. Some wearers register a chocolate-truffle impression on first wear that fades, over subsequent wearings, into something more like cocoa-dusted suede. Iris is the spine: powdery, slightly creamy, less waxy than the 2018 EDP’s orris and less lipsticky than the Reserve Privee’s. Cedar reinforces the dry, woody backbone and prevents the cacao from becoming sweet. From two hours onward the drydown settles into the title’s promise - boisee, woody. Sandalwood (the modern Mysore-substitute kind, smooth and creamy rather than the genuine article) carries the bulk of the base, with patchouli adding brown warmth and a faint earthy depth. The “woody notes” listed are clearly synthetic - fans of Iso E Super and Norlimbanol will recognise the modern dry-wood cedar amplifiers - but the synthetic woods are well-buried under the iris-cacao chord. Towards the late drydown (six hours plus) Boisee acquires a quietly smoky character that several reviewers describe as nearly incense-like. Linearity vs evolution: moderate evolution. Pepper-to-cacao-iris in the first hour is clear; from there through the drydown is more linear, holding the cacao-iris-wood signature consistently. Perceptible notes: pepper (briefly), cacao, iris, cedar, sandalwood. Submerged: coriander (folded into pepper), geranium (read as part of the iris-floral lift), patchouli (textural). Signature accord: dry cocoa-iris on cedar.
Performance
Projection is moderate at launch and the most contested aspect of Boisee - wearer sentiment splits roughly into “great for two to three hours then it dies” and “carries beautifully for six hours without being loud”. On most skins, projection is moderate (arm’s length) for the first two hours, then settles into close-to-skin for the remainder of the wear. Sillage is light to moderate - Boisee is admired but not announced. Longevity on skin averages seven to nine hours; on clothing, ten to twelve, with the cacao-iris signature still detectable. The fragrance flatters cold and cool weather decisively. In autumn and winter Boisee wears as warm, dry and dense; in summer it can feel waxy and the cacao can read as out-of-season. Humidity is mostly kind to it, slightly amplifying the iris and softening the cedar. Dry winter air is ideal. Best application strategy is generous: five to six sprays for full effect, applied to clothing as well as skin. The frequent “performance is weak” complaints almost always trace back to under-application; Boisee rewards spraying.
Wearing Context
Boisee is autumn-winter through cool early spring, evening-leaning but viable daytime in cold weather. It shines in dinner, date, theatre, indoor-formal and cold-weather office contexts. It is read by wearer consensus as one of the better date and “first impression” fragrances in the designer iris-cocoa cluster - multiple wearers nominate it as an interview or client-meeting scent for cold-weather business. It falls flat in heat, in gym/casual contexts, and in tropical climates where the cocoa-cedar register reads as heavy. The social-perception skew is sharply favourable: Boisee draws compliments from women more reliably than the EDT and Reserve Privee per wearer reports, and reads as “expensive” and “mature” without veering grandfatherly.
Comparisons & DNA
Dior Homme Intense (2011, current formulation) is the inevitable reference - the iris-cocoa-cedar template Boisee most directly engages with. Boisee is drier, less sweet, less cocoa-forward and ultimately less rich than DHI; it is also less waxy in the iris and arguably more wearable in office contexts. Many on wearer reports describe Boisee as the “more wearable cousin” of DHI. Dior Homme Parfum (2014, Kurkdjian) shares the iris-leather-powdery axis but is denser and more leather-driven; Boisee trades some of DHP’s leather depth for cocoa warmth. Valentino Uomo Intense (2015) shares the iris-ha
Reception
wearer consensus on Boisee is among the warmest of any modern Givenchy release. wearers regularly call it the best of the Gentleman line; wearers it well; wearer reports includes it routinely on “underrated designer EDP” lists. Common praise: the cocoa-iris-wood balance, the compliments it draws, the cold-weather wearability, the perceived value-for-money relative to Dior Homme Intense. Common criticism: weak projection and longevity for some wearers, with a vocal minority calling the iris “synthetic” or “Givenchy-tier rather than Dior-tier” in quality. Polarisation runs along the synthetic-woods axis - some smell the dry-cedar amplifiers and react negatively. Persolaise reviewed Boisee in October 2020 and described it favourably as a release that “has grown and matured under our noses” relative to the EDT, noting that “the iris appears and softens proceedings” after a brash opening. He criticised the name as “la
