Essence
Elisabethan Rose is a modern red-rose perfume whose distinctive feature is a warm hazelnut-and-almond body beneath the flower.
Scent Profile
The opening is spicy and green rather than citrusy: cinnamon and hazelnut leaf give the rose a crisp edge. The flower arrives quickly, reading as a vivid, lightly jammy red rose rather than a pale tea rose. Almond adds creamy thickness and the heart stays rose-led, with red lily as a secondary floral accent. Musk, dry vetiver and soft woods form a quiet base, so the rose remains recognizable from start to finish instead of changing into a separate woody fragrance.
Performance
The perfume generally has good longevity and a refined, moderate trail. It can be office-appropriate with light application, although the sweet floral density may feel too strong for some wearers. Two sprays are a sensible starting point.
Wearing Context
Cool weather, dates and dressed-up daytime wear suit the cinnamon and nutty warmth. It reads feminine in the house presentation but wears well on anyone drawn to a sweet-spicy rose. It is elegant rather than sporty or casual-fresh.
Comparisons & DNA
The original 1984 Elisabethan Rose is the key comparison: it was a lighter green aldehydic tea rose, while the current EDP is fuller, sweeter and nutty. Liquid Love offers another house rose, but its spice is more assertive. Most modern jammy roses lack Elisabethan Rose’s hazelnut-almond creaminess.
Reception
Many rose lovers value the realistic flower, unusual nutty texture and reliable wear. The main disagreement concerns sweetness: some find it lush and signature-worthy, while others find it too sugary or dense. Fans of the 1984 version are also divided because the new perfume is a different composition, not a continuation of the old one.
Versions & Reformulation
The 2018 EDP is a new composition by Alienor Massenet. It should not be treated as a reformulation of the discontinued 1984 EDT, which shared the name but had a much lighter green-rose profile.
Acquisition Notes
It is a current Penhaligon’s signature release in full and smaller sizes. Sampling is easy and recommended if you prefer dry roses or are sensitive to rich sweet florals.
