Essence
Agar de Noir is a dark coffee-oud extrait: vintage spice tinctures, bitter roasted Arabica, three real ouds, violet leather, ambergris, and smoky resin.
Scent Profile
The opening is medicinal and aromatic, with cardamom, guaiac wood, and bitter herbal tinctures suggesting an old apothecary cabinet. Ambergris adds an airy wet lift, keeping the darkness from feeling flat. The heart turns on coffee. It is roasted, bitter, peaty, and dark-chocolate-like, fused to oud rather than sweetened into gourmand comfort. The oud reads as damp wood, resin, varnish dust, smoke, and controlled fermentation. Violet gives the composition a chalky floral-leather elegance that lifts the gloom. The drydown is smoky oud, labdanum, benzoin, tonka, and ambergris. It is resinous and golden, but still dry and dark. The oud recedes sooner than some oud purists might want, leaving a polished incense-resin base.
Performance
Agar de Noir lasts well and can feel strong, but it is more elegant than overwhelming. Projection is controlled, and the darkest oud presence gradually softens into resin. A small amount is enough.
Wearing Context
Best for cold weather, evenings, and contemplative wear. It can work for experienced oud wearers who want something polished rather than brutally barnyard, but it is still too dark and brooding for hot weather or office-friendly freshness.
Comparisons & DNA
Balmain Jolie Madame is the striking reference because of the violet-leather floral spine, though Agar de Noir is much darker and oud-centered. Serge Lutens Borneo 1834 is useful for dusty brown darkness. Russian Oud is heavier and more chocolatey; Oud Luwak is more direct coffee smoke; Agar de Noir is the more violet-lifted and elegant sibling.

Specialist reception is strongly positive. Wearers praise the coffee, tempered oud, violet-leather lift, and material quality. Criticism focuses on overlap with other Areej ouds, release fatigue, and the oud thinning earlier than some oud lovers prefer. It remains expensive and discontinued, so sampling is the prudent route.
