Essence

Aqua Sapphire is Boadicea’s pricey, ozonic-but-rich marine perfume launched in 2021 as the aquatic entry in the Sapphire Collection alongside Blue, Green and Oud Sapphire. Where most niche aquatics chase blue sportiness, this one weds a calone/seaweed core to boozy davana, pineapple-rum sweetness, saffron warmth, May rose and a base of cypriol-driven smoke, moss and ambered woods. The result is a salt-air aquatic that drinks like a cocktail rather than a sport scent - and a fragrance whose entire wearer response is dominated by its similarity to Orto Parisi’s Megamare.

Scent Profile

The opening lands loud. The first ten to twenty minutes are dominated by the davana-rum-pineapple triad: davana’s natural rum-soaked stone-fruit character is amplified by the actual rum accord, and pineapple drags the whole top into a syrupy-tropical place that some wearers register as a “boozy fruit cocktail” and others as borderline shampoo-soapy. Saffron sits behind it, dry and slightly hay-like, providing texture rather than spice. Within minutes a thick calone-and-seaweed accord shoulders in - briny, slightly iodine-tinged, with the recognizable “wet-rope” character that defines the Megamare DNA. This is the signature accord: a salted-seaweed marine core wrapped in fruit liqueur. From roughly thirty minutes through the third hour, the heart resolves.

Performance

Projection is strong for the first two hours - a three-spray application throws a noticeable cloud at three to four feet - before settling to moderate at arm’s length through hour five and skin-close after that. Sillage is above average; in still indoor air it leaves a clear scent trail. Longevity on skin runs eight to ten hours with most reviewers reporting it still detectable at twelve. On clothing it is genuinely tenacious: many users report it surviving multiple wears and remaining on jackets and scarves for days.

Wearing Context

Best deployed in late spring through early autumn, daytime to early evening. It shines on warm-not-hot days near water, in office air-conditioning, and at outdoor events where its projection can dissipate; it falls flat in cold dark settings where the boozy fruit opening reads as out of season. It also fails as a stealthy/skin scent - the projection is too generous for a small office or shared workspace. Date-night use works if your date enjoys salt-and-fruit aquatics; black-tie use is a stretch because the pineapple-rum opening reads as casual luxury rather than formal.

Comparisons & DNA

The unavoidable comparison is Orto Parisi Megamare (2019, Alessandro Gualtieri). Multiple wearers describe Aqua Sapphire as a “smoother more refined posh version of Megamare,” and a wearer-driven discussion thread titled “Aqua sapphire vs megamare” exists to debate the GCMS overlap. The fair characterization: the marine core accord is in the same family, Aqua Sapphire adds the davana-rum-pineapple opening and May rose-saffron-amber backend that Megamare lacks, and is meaningfully less “fishy” and more wearable. If you own Megamare, Aqua Sapphire is partly redundant at five times the price; if you find Megamare too aggressive, Aqua Sapphire is the dressed-up version.

Reception

Wearer response crystallizes around three points: (1) it is genuinely well-made and projects ferociously, (2) it is so close to Megamare that owning both is redundant, (3) the retail price - $920 USD for 100 ml per Harrods US - is indefensible relative to performance. Wearer forum threads regularly group Boadicea with Xerjoff and Initio as “niche clone houses” - though defenders point out the davana-rum-rose-saffron complexity is genuinely additive. The polarizing axis is the seaweed/fishy heart: roughly a quarter of reviewers register it as off-putting. Blind buy verdict: no.

Versions & Reformulation

Single composition, no known reformulations. Released only as Pure Parfum at the Sapphire Collection’s standard concentration. Available in 10 ml, 50 ml and 100 ml flacons plus 2 ml carded samples sold via the house. The “Sapphire Set” gift miniature collection includes Aqua, Blue, Green and Oud Sapphires at 10 ml each.

Acquisition Notes

It sits in the ultra-premium niche range. Retail at Harrods US is $920 USD for 100 ml (through Harrods US retail copy); house and Selfridges UK pricing tracks roughly GBP 600.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Aqua Sapphire was Boadicea’s 2021 marine entry into the Sapphire Collection, which had been anchored since 2013 by the rose-oud Blue Sapphire.
  • Christian Provenzano formulated it; in the 2018 brand interview “Boadicea Looks to the East,” Boadicea CEO David Crisp described Provenzano as having made about 80 fragrances for the house at that point (“for the last seven years we’ve been working exclusively with Christian”), working out of CPL Aromas’ Dubai creative center where Provenzano relocated in 2006.
  • Boadicea’s official copy positions Aqua Sapphire as “inspired by eternal seas and island nations” with “a briny seaweed with facets of iodine and salt… Allied to classic Rose de Mai.” The 2019 launch of Orto Parisi’s Megamare reframed the niche aquatic category, and Aqua Sapphire’s 2021 arrival was interpreted by wearer wearers as a strategic flanker-style response - a critique David Crisp partially acknowledged in the same brand interview when discussing how the house is itself extensively copied in Kuwait and elsewhere: “I was in Kuwait two weeks ago and nearly every Arabic brand is copying Complex and Blue Sapphire and they are very open about that.” No celebrity endorsement is documented; no viral moment outside fragrance video reviews where it has been compared to Megamare in roughly a dozen review videos.
