Boadicea the Victorious — Opal
Essence
Opal is Boadicea’s 2025 pure parfum centrepiece, composed by Julie Lerendu of Robertet and unveiled at Esxence 2025 in Milan. Despite a published pyramid that names coffee, cocoa, saffron, rose, suede, orris, lavender, davana, and cashmeran among nineteen-plus materials, the perfume in wear is built around two simpler accords: a spicy-leathery oud-adjacent core and a rose-geranium-dried-fruit center with a metallic-orris shimmer. It is the Boadicea release that has received the most critic-level attention of any in the line in the past year, with a review and a major long-form feature both running in early 2025.
Scent Profile
The 10 - 20 minute opening is dense and uncommon: a sweet-spicy-resinous burst in which coffee, saffron, bay leaf, cinnamon and black pepper hit nearly simultaneously, with a faint metallic shimmer (the brand lists “metallic notes” explicitly in the pyramid, and several reviewers register it as a cool, almost zinc-or-blood facet over the warm spices). The coffee is restrained - not a Tom Ford Cafe Rose espresso pull, more a roasted-bean dustiness - and it sits alongside the saffron-leather facet rather than dominating. Bergamot threads through the top quietly. Several wearers compare the immediate effect to Parfums de Marly Herod (boozy-spicy-tonka) before the perfume distinguishes itself. Between thirty minutes and three hours, the heart blooms: orris is the most-cited mid-phase material across wearer reports, lending a waxy, lipstick-like, faintly powdery quality that is mirrored by the suede note. Cocoa adds a low-volume bitter-sweet warmth that reads as ambient texture rather than as a chocolate facet.
Performance
Projection is strong for the first two hours (clear half-metre cloud) and moderate through hours three to six, then settles to an intimate skin scent at parfum density. Sillage is well above average for the first three hours. Skin longevity is consistently reported at 8 - 12 hours, with several wearers reporting longer; on cloth Opal persists multiple days, particularly the orris-cashmeran base. The metallic-orris-spice profile is amplified by cool, dry weather and slightly muted by humidity; Opal works in temperate conditions year-round but is at its strongest in autumn and winter, where the cashmeran-and-leather facets dominate.
Wearing Context
Opal is dressed-up and adult - it does not work casually. Best contexts: dinner, the opera, a gallery opening, formal evening events, a Christmas Eve setting (one wearer explicitly named it “my Christmas Eve scent for 2025”). It is interestingly office-wearable in moderation because the orris-lavender-clary-sage spine reads as composed and slightly old-money rather than party-loud. It falls flat outdoors in heat, in gym/casual settings, and around food because the cocoa-coffee-spice opening competes with kitchen smells.
Comparisons & DNA
The most-cited wearer comparison is Chanel Coromandel (“If you’ve smelled Chanel Coromandel, you’ve smelled this. The problem is many haven’t”) - both share an orris-patchouli-amber spine with a powdery-sophisticated finish, though Opal adds the coffee-cocoa-suede top and cashmeran base that Coromandel lacks. A prominent wearer review compares Opal to Parfums de Marly Herod (cashmeran-tonka-tobacco) and to Masque Milano II-II Mandala (in the aromatic-green dry-down phase); a separate wearer accounts reading places Opal alongside John Varvatos Dark Rebel for “luxury extrait interpretation of that DNA.” Within Boadicea the closest siblings are Bodacious (the 2021 cherry-cognac-tonka with a similar warm-dark base) and the older Decadence (apple-raspberry-saffron-leather-oud) - Opal is the more orris-led, less fruity-led version of that family. There is no Lattafa, Armaf, or Maison Alhambra direct clone of Opal; the closest budget approximation in the cashmeran-tonka-orris register remains Lattafa Khamrah Qahwa (for the coffee-spice opening) and Armaf Club de Nuit Privee Aurum (for the leather-spice).
Reception
Reception has been the strongest of any 2025 niche launch in the Boadicea catalogue. Steven Gavrielatos’s Cafleurebon review is the on-record critic review, calling Opal “an enchanting blend of orris, coffee, and spice” and emphasising the orris-lavender-clary-sage heart and the patchouli-sandalwood-cedar base. A long-form perfume feature framed Opal as an evocation of “fire in the darkness,” referencing the Napoleon-Josephine “L’Incendie de Troie” black opal narrative supplied as the perfume’s inspiration. Wearer reception is mixed-to-positive: several reviewers call it the “new Boadicea, rose and incense”; others find it overly intense and not for them; others compare it unflatteringly to Coromandel at three times the price.
Versions & Reformulation

Notable Facts & Lore
- Opal’s stated brief, per perfumer Julie Lerendu’s own Instagram (as quoted by a perfume writer in March 2025), is “an ode to the mystical opal stone, capturing the magic of the Year of the Wood Snake” - placing Opal explicitly within Boadicea’s tradition of releasing fragrances aligned with the Chinese zodiac, alongside earlier releases like Tiangou (Year of the Dog) and Dragon.
- The brand has additionally circulated a romantic narrative tying Opal to the legend of “L’Incendie de Troie,” a 700-carat black opal Napoleon allegedly gifted to Josephine, which a long-form feature ran with at length in 2025.
- The perfume was launched as Boadicea’s flagship Esxence 2025 reveal in Milan, with Kintessence handling US distribution and a sample giveaway running in March 2025.
- The launch also included sample-driven video reviews.
