Réminiscence — Etoile de Rem
Essence
Etoile de Rem is the sweeter, more tropical summer interpretation of Réminiscence’s cult marine fragrance Rem. Created by Mélanie Carestia and released in 2008, it keeps the house’s salty-seawater-over-vanilla signature but folds in coconut, ylang-ylang and orange blossom for a softer, solar-floral reading. The interesting part is that it lands as a genuine salty-coconut-vanilla beach scent rather than a sugary suntan-lotion gourmand. It is now discontinued, which has only sharpened its cult appeal among marine and beach-scent devotees.
Scent Profile
The opening is a flash of citrus and bergamot brightness laid immediately over a salty seawater accord, setting the beach-wet tone from the first spray. Within minutes the freshness gives way to the heart, which is where the fragrance lives.
The heart is the signature: coconut read by most wearers as fresh coconut water or milk rather than a foody, oily suntan note, threaded with seawater and soft solar white florals of ylang-ylang and orange blossom. This is the tropical center, sunlit and creamy without tipping into dessert.
The base is a light vanilla, coumarin and musk that adds warmth and a faint monoï impression without weight. The drydown stays soft and close, leaving a salty-sweet coconut-cream skin impression. Overall the fragrance reads broadly linear and tropical, evolving in feel more than in structure.
Performance
Performance is generally moderate and varies by skin, but it ranks among the stronger performers in the Rem family. Several owners report it lasting all day, especially when sprayed on clothing, where the salty marine accord holds longest. For a beach-day scent, apply liberally and consider spraying clothes as well as skin to extend its staying power.
Wearing Context
This is a dedicated hot-weather fragrance: summer, vacation, poolside and seaside, daytime and casual. The seawater note makes it read as a beach scent first and foremost, and it is poorly suited to cold weather or the office. Though marketed as feminine, it wears easily unisex, and male wearers report drawing compliments and questions about it.
Comparisons & DNA
The most useful reference is internal. Against the original Rem (1996), Etoile de Rem is softer, sweeter and more tropical, trading some of Rem’s sharpness for added coconut, vanilla and ylang. The later Rem Coco (2020) is the closest modern analog, pairing creamy coconut with the same salty marine spine, and is the easiest current substitute now that Etoile is out of production. More broadly it sits in the solar marine-floral-coconut family alongside beachy salty-vanilla scents such as Jul et Mad Vanilla Vibes. No established designer dupe exists.
Reception
Wearers who love marine and beach scents respond warmly, praising it as evocative and vacation-in-a-bottle, and noting good value. The clearest axis of disagreement is the salty-marine note: detractors find it can read as harbor or fishing-boat funk rather than clean tropical beach, and some coconut-seekers are disappointed that it leans more citrus and marine than creamy coconut. As with the whole Rem line, it is a love-it-or-hate-it marine proposition rather than a crowd-pleaser, best approached by confirmed fans of salty marine and coconut summer scents.
Versions & Reformulation
Etoile de Rem is an eau de toilette and one of several now-discontinued Rem flankers, alongside Crazy Rem, Eau de Rem, Rem & Bow and Sea Rem. The broader Rem franchise remains active, spanning the original 1996 EDT, a 2015 EDP, Rem L’Acqua, Rem Escale à St. Barth, Rem Homme and Rem Coco, but Etoile itself is out of production. No reformulation specific to Etoile is documented.
Acquisition Notes
Etoile de Rem is discontinued, so availability is limited to secondhand bottles and old stock. Réminiscence is historically an affordable French house and the Rem line is widely regarded as a bargain, so prices were never high when in production. Those wanting a comparable scent new should look to the in-production Rem Coco; buyers seeking Etoile itself should use reputable resellers given its out-of-production status.
