Parfums de Marly — Athénaïs
Essence
Athenais is Parfums de Marly’s February 2026 launch by Quentin Bisch (the perfumer behind Delina), a luminous neroli - orange-blossom - tonka EDP positioned as a brighter, more solar alternative to the house’s rose-heavy bestsellers. Bisch frames it as a duality of contrasts: bright citrus and white florals atop a warm, slightly gourmand tonka-vanilla base, with Givaudan’s Mahonial molecule lending a green-magnolia luminosity to the floral heart. It is named for Athenais de Montespan, Louis XIV’s mistress, signaling overt feminine assertion. Within PdM’s range it is a Valaya - Safanad - Delina hybrid in solar register.
Scent Profile
Heart (1 - 3 hours): the composition pivots to its actual center of gravity - orange flower absolute and jasmine sambac absolute, threaded with Mahonial. It gives the white-floral heart a luminous, almost dewy diffusion that prevents the orange blossom from going waxy or soapy. The jasmine is light, non-indolic; the orange blossom is the dominant floral signal. Drydown (3+ hours): tonka bean, vanilla accord, and amber accord settle into a powdery-sweet warmth. The base is gourmand-adjacent without being a true gourmand - closer to the powdered-tonka facet of Prada Paradoxe than to the boozy vanilla of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. Ambroxan (acknowledged in Luckyscent’s note breakdown but absent from PdM’s official pyramid) provides a salty-skin radiance through the drydown that some testers identify directly: “i can smell the ambroxan.” Perceptibility: orange blossom and tonka dominate. Neroli is clear in the opening. Jasmine sambac and Mahonial are submerged structurally (you feel them more than smell them as discrete notes). Vanilla and amber are textural rather than overt. Evolution is moderate; the arc is bright-to-warm but not dramatic. Signature accord: solar orange blossom over creamy, powdered tonka with Mahonial-driven luminosity.
Performance
Performance is the dossier’s weak point. Velvet Life pegged it at “5 to 7 hours on the skin” with sillage that is “intimate to moderate, making it a ‘polite’ fragrance ideal for professional settings or warm weather.” 0 - both below the PdM line norm. Projection: arm’s length for the first hour; close-to-skin thereafter. Clothing performance is better - orange blossom and tonka cling to fabric, with detectable residue 24 hours later on wool/cotton. Heat amplifies the citrus opening and slightly mutes the tonka drydown - strong spring/summer performer in that profile. Cold dampens the bright top and pushes the composition straight into its warm-powdery base prematurely. Humidity intensifies the orange blossom (favorable).
Wearing Context
Spring and summer daytime - and that profile is unusually narrow for a $410 PdM. Athenais is built for warm-weather brightness: morning meetings, brunches, garden weddings, daytime social events, office wear in temperate to warm seasons. Bridal use is repeatedly cited (Velvet Life lists it explicitly as “bridal” and “office-safe”). It works marginally in cold weather but loses its solar identity. It falls flat at night where a more concentrated, sensual fragrance would dominate, and in true winter cold the citrus opening reads underwhelmed. Social-perception skew: 25 - 45 demographic, polished, “clean girl” aesthetic. Reads as feminine, optimistic, slightly bridal.
Comparisons & DNA
Parfums de Marly Valaya: the most-cited comparison. Both share a clean, slightly aldehydic orange-blossom-with-musk DNA. Valaya is cooler, more peach-aldehyde-driven, with Akigalawood and Nympheal anchoring; Athenais is warmer, more tonka-forward, less crisp. Parfums de Marly Safanad: extremely close - both lean on fruit-orange-blossom openings into creamy bases. Safanad is more pear-and-cream; Athenais more citrus-and-tonka. Parfums de Marly Delina (Quentin Bisch, 2017): the brand’s hero feminine. Delina is rose-litchi-rhubarb-led; Athenais is white-floral-citrus. Same perfumer, different DNA. Athenais is positioned by PdM Americas president Yvan Jacqueline as opening “new olfactive territory” rather than flanking Delina. Prada Paradoxe (2022): the most discussed competitor.
Reception
Common refrain: “should have been a Valaya flanker.” Influencer pickup has been quieter than for Carios or Castley, with Bisch’s involvement getting more mention than the juice itself.
Versions & Reformulation
Single composition, single concentration (EDP, 75ml only at launch, $410 US retail). No Exclusif flanker announced. Launched in the US market first (with global rollout planned for March 2026 onward per WWD’s reporting) - atypical for PdM, which usually launches globally simultaneously. No reformulations possible given recency.
Acquisition Notes
Retail: $410 for 75ml EDP at Parfums-de-Marly. Com, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Luckyscent (as of May 2026). No counterfeits yet documented at scale (too new to have entered the fake supply chain at volume; expected within 6 - 12 months given PdM’s counterfeit profile). Batch codes: 7-digit format under current packaging; verify via CheckFresh or Batchcode. PdM offers QR-code authentication on current packaging. Buy direct from PdM, authorized brick-and-mortar (Saks’s PdM business was disrupted in late 2025 per WWD reporting; Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman remain authorized), or Luckyscent.
Notable Facts & Lore
- Athenais is named for Francoise-Athenais de Rochechouart de Mortemart, Marquise de Montespan (1640 - 1707), the most powerful royal mistress at Louis XIV’s court (maitresse-en-titre 1667 - 1683) - a deliberate departure from PdM’s usual thoroughbred-naming convention.
- The pivot to a human historical figure is significant: it reframes the house’s “perfumed court” mythology around female agency rather than equine prestige.
- Bisch has an established relationship with Mahonial - per Perfumer & Flavorist, his Missoni (2015) was the molecule’s debut fine-fragrance use, the year after Givaudan introduced it.
- Athenais is thus one of his most prominent re-engagements with the material. WWD’s launch coverage included quotes from Yvan Jacqueline, PdM’s president of Americas: “Every time we adopt a new proposition, it is to open up a new territory and add up to this global spectrum, to be able to invite and welcome more and more clients.” That will allow us to anchor the new fragrance first in the U.
