Barénia is Christine Nagel’s modern Hermès chypre, built around tart fruit, butterfly lily, patchouli, Akigalawood, and roasted oakwood. It is notable for creating a supple leather-like effect without listing a conventional leather note.
Scent Profile
The opening is acidic, mineral, and fruity rather than sugary. Bergamot and a miracle-berry-inspired dark-fruit effect create a sparkling, slightly peppery start. Damascones add an apricot-like yellow-fruit suggestion. Butterfly lily supplies the heart with a floral tone that is gingery and peppery instead of creamy-white-floral. The base is the core of the concept: patchouli, diffusive Akigalawood, and roasted oakwood replace the old oakmoss model. The result can read as suede, polished wood, and warm mineral skin.
Performance

The 2024 EDP is the original release. A darker EDP Intense arrived in 2025 with explicit leather, denser patchouli, and more oakwood. The Intense appeals more strongly to some leather and chypre wearers, while others prefer the original’s brightness.
