Essence
Vetiver Tonka is the gateway vetiver-the composition that proves vetiver can be sweet, nutty, gourmand-adjacent, and warm without losing its essential earthy spine. One of the original 2004 Hermessence quartet, it remains, alongside Ambre Narguile, the most popular and most commercially durable fragrance in the entire Hermessence line. Jean-Claude Ellena built a “vetiver for people who don’t like vetiver” by surrounding the dry root with hazelnut, toasted-cereal facets, tonka bean, and praline-a near-gourmand pastry register that softens the raw vetiver into something genuinely caressing.

The opening (first ten to twenty minutes) is the freshest moment: bergamot and neroli give a brief citrus-floral lift before vetiver itself takes over. The vetiver here is the Haitian/Bourbon-style green, fresh, slightly grassy facet rather than the smokier Sri Lankan/Indonesian style.
