Hermès — Terre d'Hermès Eau Givree
Essence
Terre d’Hermes Eau Givree is Christine Nagel’s icy-bright EDP reinterpretation of the Terre d’Hermes DNA, released in 2022 as the de facto replacement for Jean-Claude Ellena’s discontinued Eau Tres Fraiche (2014). “Givree” means frosted/iced in French-Nagel’s stated brief was a “freshness of a land covered with ice.” The composition turns Terre’s familiar grapefruit-and-mineral structure into something colder, citron-and-juniper-led, with Nepalese Timut pepper supplying a grapefruit-adjacent spicy lift. It is the most natural-feeling, most accessible, and most warm-weather-suitable member of the Terre d’Hermes family, and won the Fragrance Foundation’s “Fragrance of the Year-Men’s Prestige” in 2023.
Scent Profile
The opening (first ten to twenty minutes) is the entire selling proposition: a cold, slightly sour, almost crystalline citron-the antique citron variety, called cedrat in French, has a thicker, more bitter, less juicy character than lemon-alongside the unmistakable bright, citrusy-spicy buzz of Timut pepper. Timut pepper, sourced from Nepal, has a remarkable grapefruit-peel facet built into its natural odor, which is why Nagel chose it: it amplifies the citrus axis from a different angle than ordinary bergamot or grapefruit would. The opening reads as gin-and-tonic with a peppered lemon twist-cold, dry, almost sparkly. Juniper berries arrive within minutes and reinforce the gin impression: piney, resinous, green-cold. The heart (one to three hours) is where the perfume settles closer to recognizable Terre d’Hermes DNA. The citron and Timut soften; juniper persists; a familiar Iso E Super-style cedrous-mineral haze emerges underneath.
Performance
Moderate projection at a one-to-two-foot bubble for the first two hours, narrowing to skin-close past three. Sillage moderate, not designer-powerhouse. Longevity on skin: six to eight hours of identifiable scent, with the woody-mineral drydown trailing past ten hours. On clothing: substantially longer; the base notes cling well to wool and cotton.
Wearing Context
Native seasons: late spring through early autumn. It is genuinely versatile across temperatures but excels in the 18 - 30°C window. Time of day: anytime; this is one of the few Hermes fragrances that legitimately works for morning office, midday outdoor, and evening dinner without dissonance. Best occasions: warm-weather everyday, business-casual settings, hot-day dates, summer weddings, travel.
Comparisons & DNA
The natural family comparison: against the original Terre d’Hermes EDT (2006, Ellena), Eau Givree is colder, cleaner, fresher, and less mineral-flinty; the original is drier and more orange-led. Against Terre d’Hermes Parfum (2009), Eau Givree is significantly lighter, less smoky, less concentrated. Against Terre d’Hermes Eau Intense Vetiver (2018, Nagel), Eau Givree is fresher and less vetiver-dominated-Eau Intense is the dry, vetiver-led brother; Eau Givree is the citrus-led brother; both come from Nagel and share architectural DNA. Against the discontinued Terre d’Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche (2014, Ellena), which Eau Givree formally replaces, the contrast is between Mediterranean-coastal (Tres Fraiche’s marine-neroli register) and continental-icy (Eau Givree’s juniper-Timut register).
Reception
Wearer consensus is unusually warm for a major-house flanker. wear reports sentiment is strong (notably high for a 2022 release), wear reports positive sentiment is similar, wear reports frequently recommends it as a “safe blind buy” for warm weather. The Fragrance Foundation’s 2023 Men’s Prestige award is the institutional confirmation. wear reports are largely positive; one captured the consensus well: “This is an excellent flanker, which does not and cannot bring what Eau Tres Fraiche brought to the game, as a TdH usable for even extremely hot weather.
Versions & Reformulation
Single concentration to date: eau de parfum, 50ml and 100ml refillable bottles. The bottle itself is a deliberate departure-frosted glass and brushed aluminum, fully recyclable, refillable at Hermes boutiques. The frosted/aluminum aesthetic is the most distinctive packaging change in the Terre d’Hermes line since the original 2006 release. No flanker reformulations have been announced or detected as of mid-2026; the composition is too recent for IFRA-driven changes.
Acquisition Notes
Designer-luxury bracket (technically designer but positioned closer to luxury pricing): roughly $130 - $150 for 50ml EDP and $180 - $210 for 100ml EDP at full Hermes retail. Available at Hermes boutiques, Hermes.com, and at department store fragrance counters (Sephora, authorized department stores, Macy’s).
