Bergamot, lemon, and mandarin brighten crisp green leaves, while clary sage adds the herbal, slightly peppery edge that gives the fragrance its cool air. It feels like citrus light on foliage rather than a conventional fresh cologne. Rose appears with a light hand in the heart, keeping color in the composition without turning it into a floral scent. The leather is dry and clean, more like a polished accent than a soft suede accord. These details preserve the formal chypre line as the opening begins to settle. Oakmoss is the foundation of the drydown. Patchouli, musk, and a trace of vanilla give it earthy warmth, but the overall impression remains green, herbal, and lightly leathery. It does not change direction dramatically after the first citrus phase; it becomes a steady mossy chypre with a close, composed finish.

As a 14% extrait, Northern Cardinal delivers solid workday wear with moderate, refined projection rather than an oversized cloud. The citrus becomes quieter fairly quickly, leaving the green-mossy base to carry the later hours. It is best applied as a polished personal scent, especially when a restrained trail is preferable to forceful diffusion.

Cool weather is its natural setting: late autumn, winter, and early spring all suit the frosted greenery and moss. It is versatile enough for daytime and office use, with enough formality for dinners or refined social occasions. Puig Quorum is the clearest comparison. Both are green-and-leathery chypres associated with Rosendo Mateu, but Northern Cardinal is cleaner, cooler, and more controlled in its citrus opening. Zoologist Elephant provides an in-house reference for leafy character. Elephant is fuller and more expansive, while Northern Cardinal keeps the leaves within a flatter, more classical chypre frame. Mousse Illuminee occupies nearby moss-focused territory, though with a more avant-garde feel. Acqua di Bergamotto by Ermenegildo Zegna is a useful opening-phase reference for the bright bergamot and spice, not for the oakmoss-led drydown.

Northern Cardinal is admired as an elegant, balanced modern chypre and as a notable late work from Mateu. Its restraint, recognizable chypre skeleton, and easy wearability are its strongest appeals. It is especially attractive to wearers who want green-leather structure without a heavily animalic interpretation. The divide is real, however. The same clary-sage-led sharpness can read as fresh and aristocratic to one wearer, then as cumin-like, aggressively green, or generic cologne-like to another. Bryan Ross of From Pyrgos was notably dismissive of the spicy-cumin effect and its value. Sampling matters more than usual here, both because of the skin-chemistry variance and because the original style is intentionally dry and old-school.

The fragrance launched in 2022 as the limited-edition Cardinal in a red bottle, then returned as Northern Cardinal in a clear bottle. Zoologist identifies the latter as the same scent under a new name. Some wearers report a small performance edge for the original red bottle, but that remains anecdotal rather than a confirmed reformulation. Both versions are presented as Extrait de Parfum at 14% concentration.

Northern Cardinal is sold primarily in a 60 ml bottle, with 10 ml travel sprays and 1.5 ml samples also offered.
