Zoologist — Rhinoceros Edition 2020
Essence
Rhinoceros Edition 2020 is Prin Lomros’s dark, dry reinterpretation of Zoologist’s original Rhinoceros. Whiskey, coffee, tobacco, leather, oud and dusty amber turn the animal concept into a rich savanna scene with more polish and less pine than its predecessor.
Scent Profile
It opens with rum, whiskey, coffee, pink pepper and a green basil lift. The effect is assertive and spicy, with a faint wetness that keeps the boozy materials from reading like a dry cigar box. Use a light hand: the first stage can fill a room. Tobacco moves to the foreground as the opening settles. Leather, incense, sweet grass and ylang-ylang give it a warm, dry-grass texture, while cypriol supplies much of the smoke. The result is more savory than sugary and more atmospheric than a straightforward leather scent. In the base, Laotian oud, patchouli, cypriol, oakmoss and amber create a warm, earthy foundation. The oud is woody and faintly animalic rather than medicinal. The fragrance finishes as cured tobacco, dusty leather and mossy amber, with a steady development from booze to tobacco to warm leather.
Performance
This is a potent extrait with a substantial early aura and long staying power. One or two sprays are usually enough, especially for indoor wear. Its dry construction can hold up in warmth, but its richness still makes it more natural for deliberate, lower-key application.
Wearing Context
Rhinoceros Edition 2020 suits evenings, gatherings and cool weather, but people comfortable with dry tobacco scents can wear it across seasons. It is formally unisex and reads confident, mature and masculine-leaning. It is too characterful for an office-safe default, but excellent when a strong personal signature is welcome.
Comparisons & DNA
The 2014 Paul Kiler Rhinoceros is the most important reference. That original was a harsher pine, herb and booze composition; the 2020 edition is smoother, more tobacco-led and more explicitly shaped around oud, cypriol and amber. They share an animal theme and a boozy nod, not a continuous formula. Nasomatto Duro is an adjacent reference for dense masculine leather, though Rhinoceros adds a much clearer whiskey effect. Frédéric Malle Monsieur and Tom Ford Tobacco Oud help orient its boozy tobacco register, but Lomros’s sweet grass and cypriol create a drier, stranger texture.
Reception
The 2020 edition is generally admired as an accessible route into Zoologist’s bolder work. Tobacco, leather and dry amber make a persuasive animal landscape, while the oud is appreciated for avoiding an overtly medicinal character. Its performance and distinct point of view are recurring strengths. The main disagreement is with the 2014 original. Some find the new version a more composed successor; others want the former fragrance’s sharper pine-and-leather force. The prominent rum and occasional stable-like effect can also be divisive, so it is best sampled rather than bought blind.
Versions & Reformulation
This is a 2020 reinterpretation by Prin Lomros, replacing Paul Kiler’s discontinued 2014 original. It is a 20% extrait with a new whiskey, coffee, sweet grass, ylang-ylang, oud and cypriol structure. The original remains relevant to collectors, but the two scents should be approached as separate works.
Acquisition Notes
The 60 ml bottle is in current production at the upper end of Zoologist’s niche range. Samples are readily available and especially useful given the projection and boozy-animalic profile. Verify the release year and perfumer when shopping, since the discontinued 2014 version carries the same core name.
