Skai is the softest idea in Comme des Garcons’ Synthetic series: a wearable portrait of fake leather, PVC, and newly unwrapped vinyl. It turns an artificial upholstery material into something cool, clean, oddly cozy, and collectible.
Scent Profile
The opening is bright synthetic freshness. Grapefruit gives a tart, slightly sweet lift, but the main impression is cool plastic: cellophane, PVC, and the smell of something new being taken out of its packaging. Ozone makes the effect airy rather than heavy. As Skai settles, it becomes more leather-like without ever smelling like real hide. The suede, labdanum, and white-leather facets suggest imitation upholstery: smooth, clean, slightly warm, and deliberately artificial. Cardamom is part of the listed structure, though many wearers experience it more as a dry lift than as a distinct spice. The drydown is the most wearable phase. The vinyl edge softens into a muted musky-suede skin scent with a faint resinous warmth. Skai remains linear, but the shock of the opening becomes comfort: less shower-clean than just-unpacked.

Skai is intimate. It may last, but it goes quiet quickly and sits close to skin after the first hour. Some people get better persistence, but projection is generally modest. Apply generously if you want the plastic-leather idea to stay present.

Donna Karan Fuel for Men is a useful leather reference, but Skai is cooler and more artificial. There is no direct duplicate.

Skai is loved for making a strange concept wearable. Praise centers on the new-vinyl realism, the soft suede-labdanum drydown, and the balance between art object and daily scent. Criticism comes from two places: some find the Synthetic series too gimmicky, while others like Skai but wish it projected more. Because it was not reissued with the later Olfactory Library selections, its reputation has grown around scarcity as much as smell. It is a sample-first fragrance unless the goal is collecting the original Synthetic line.
Versions & Reformulation
Skai launched in 2004 as part of Series 6 Synthetic in Eau de Toilette form. The original line was discontinued. When selected Synthetic fragrances returned in 2017, Skai was not among them, so there is no known reissue and no documented reformulation.
Acquisition Notes
Original bottles are collectible and appear irregularly through resale or old stock. The transparent canister and internal pouch presentation are part of the object. Availability is thinner than for Garage or Tar because Skai did not return in the Olfactory Library program.
