Essence

Leather Eau de Parfum (2019, part of the Signatures of the Sun collection) is the higher-concentration black-bottle re-issue of the 2014 Colonia Leather Eau de Cologne Concentrée — François Demachy’s Italian-citrus answer to Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, built around a tart raspberry-orange-lemon opening, a thyme-rose-honeysuckle heart, and a smoky lacquered leather-cedar-guaiac base. It is one of the most polarizing entries in the AdP catalog: critics either rate it as Demachy’s masterwork for the house or dismiss it as a Tuscan Leather knockoff.

Scent Profile

The opening is jarring on first contact: a sharp lacquered-leather note hits within the first thirty seconds, simultaneous with the citrus, rather than after it. This is opposite to most leather fragrances (which traditionally build leather over time) and is the cleanest evidence of Demachy citing Tuscan Leather (2007), which uses the same compressed structure. Raspberry is the bridge note: tart, slightly synthetic in the ionone register, and clearly serving the same role here as in Tuscan Leather — to add fruity bite to the leather and prevent it from going purely smoky. Brazilian orange and Sicilian lemon contribute a brighter citrus halo than Tuscan Leather has; Persolaise specifically flagged this “tangy” citrus-mandarin facet as the AdP-house signature laid over the leather genome. By minute twenty the citrus has burned off and the heart unfolds. Rose is the dominant of the four middle notes — deep, slightly jammy, not powdery — but it never moves toward a Dior Homme Parfum rose-powder register; here the rose is in service of the leather. Red thyme adds a green herbal sharpness, petitgrain extends the citrus halo, and honeysuckle contributes a faint nectar-sweetness that softens the rose-leather chord. The raspberry persists through the heart as a tangy undertone.

Performance

This is one of the strongest-projecting Acqua di Parma fragrances. Projection is strong for the first two to three hours — a 90 cm to 1. 5 m bubble — then contracts to a moderate skin-projecting cloud that holds for several more hours. Sillage is generous; people in the next seat will notice. Longevity on skin runs eight to twelve hours typical, with multiple reviewers reporting “next day longevity” on clothing. The leather and guaiac base is exceptionally persistent on wool, cotton and especially leather goods themselves.

Wearing Context

Evening, fall/winter date, formal dinner, leather-jacket weather, cool autumn office, wedding guest in October. Leather EDP signals confidence and a willingness to project — it is not a quiet scent. It pairs naturally with leather goods (jacket, boots, briefcase), tailored wool, and dark color palettes. Where it falls flat: hot summer day, beach, gym, anywhere requiring restraint or freshness. It also doesn’t work well in tightly enclosed corporate settings where projection is a liability. Social-perception skew: bold, mature, “Italian playboy” or “wealthy creative director” — not subtle.

Comparisons & DNA

Tom Ford Tuscan Leather (Harry Frémont, 2007) — the canonical reference and direct ancestor. Persolaise explicitly identified the same structural genome — “they’re both the type of leather scent which I am unable to describe without resorting to the word ‘tangy’” — and noted that Tuscan Leather is “louder, dryer and it displays a stronger rubber + plastic vibe (think: smell of a new car)” while Leather is the “softer, more pleasant delivery. “ The two are roughly 70–80% similar in DNA. Multiple reviewers state owning both is “redundant. “ - Knize Ten (Vincent Roubert, 1924) — the leather-citrus archetype that Persolaise wondered whether Demachy was secretly citing.

Reception

Consensus is strongly positive among leather-fragrance enthusiasts and dismissive among Tuscan Leather purists who see Leather EDP as redundant. wearers currently lists Leather EDP at (May 2026); a wearer reviewer rating clusters higher. Praise: realistic leather note, surprising power, AdP quality, citrus opening differentiates from Tuscan Leather, year-round potential for cool-weather wearers. Criticism: too similar to Tuscan Leather (the most common complaint), polarizing raspberry-citrus opening, the 2022 reformulation report (see below), and recent discontinuation. Polarization axes: (1) Tuscan Leather comparison — is differentiation enough to justify owning both?

Versions & Reformulation

This is the most documented reformulation in the recent AdP line. The 2014 launch as Colonia Leather Eau de Cologne Concentrée (brown bottle, formula code 08873/A per wearers contributors) was re-packaged in 2019 as Leather Eau de Parfum in a black bottle under the Signatures of the Sun line — same juice per side-by-side formula-code confirmation. However, wearers contributors traced a formula change to a new code 16197 appearing on a production dated November 9, 2022 (date codes 3132Y), with the reformulated juice reading “more ‘minty’” and possibly containing more birch tar than the original.

Acquisition Notes

Pricing position: luxury. Authorized retail at launch was approximately £197 for 100 ml and £242 for 180 ml at John Lewis and Selfridges; US AdP boutique pricing was comparable in dollar terms. With discontinuation, prices in 2025–2026 have stabilized at $150–250 for 100 ml on grey-market discounters (FragranceNet routinely lists 100 ml around $190) and the 180 ml is increasingly difficult to source. Travel-size 20 ml options exist at $50–70. Pre-2022 production bottles command a small premium on the secondary market.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Demachy on Leather: in the brand’s launch communications and in subsequent press, Demachy framed the original 2014 Colonia Leather as an explicit homage to traditional Italian leather-making (the AdP press copy reads “Intensely charismatic, Leather is an ode to the traditions of leather-making”).
  • Persolaise speculated in his 2014 review that Demachy was citing Knize Ten (1924), and the structural similarity is real enough to support that reading.
  • Demachy revisited the same raspberry-leather structure for the 2021 AdP Oud & Spice, which Persolaise noted as confirmation of the perfumer’s interest in the formula — calling it a structure Demachy “played around with… in 2014 for Acqua Di Parma Colonia Leather and now he visits it again for the same brand in Oud & Spice.
  • “ Launch context: the 2019 re-issue as Leather Eau de Parfum was part of LVMH’s broader Signatures of the Sun consolidation, which reorganized the Ingredient Collection (Oud, Leather, Ambra, Sandalo) into a new line with updated packaging and higher concentrations.
  • The shift from “Eau de Cologne Concentrée” to “Eau de Parfum” was a marketing-positioning move as much as a formulation one — Demachy himself reportedly preferred the EDC Concentrée terminology, but consumer research showed buyers read “EDP” as stronger and more luxury-coded.
  • Cultural footprint: Leather EDP has been a recurring fixture in GQ, Esquire and Robb Report leather-fragrance roundups, and is one of the most-cited AdP fragrances in YouTube reviewer rotations (Jeremy Fragrance, Wilberto Mejia and Sebs Fragrances have all covered it positively).
