Essence
Opus XV - King Blue is Amouage’s surreal animalic oud: a 2023 Library Collection fragrance that seems to begin with the base, then brighten into fruit, incense, amber, and woods. It is deliberately not a safe blue scent.
Scent Profile
The opening is raw oud and leather before it is anything polite. Barnyard, cheesy, stable-like, and animalic facets arrive immediately, with enough force that close sniffing can feel harsher than the surrounding scent cloud. Mandarin, blackcurrant, and pink pepper cut through the darkness with tart candy-fruit brightness. Frankincense and amber then round the center, warming the oud without making it gentle. Leather, oak, sandalwood, and patchouli keep the base dense, woody, and slightly earthy. The unusual part is the direction of travel. King Blue lightens as it dries, moving from barnyard oud into sweet amber woods, candied fruit, and roasted-blueberry impressions. Its signature is animalic oud colliding with fruit, then resolving into a sweeter woody trail.
Performance
King Blue performs like a high-concentration Amouage. It lasts very long, projects strongly in the first hours, and can create a large scent bubble from minimal sprays. One or two sprays are enough.
Wearing Context
This is a cool-weather, evening, statement fragrance for oud enthusiasts and confident wearers. It is not office-safe in the opening and may be too animalic for general audiences. The drydown is more approachable, but the first phase requires tolerance for funk.
Comparisons & DNA
Opus XIII - Silver Oud is the most important reference: King Blue is warmer, fruitier, sweeter, and more wearable, while Silver Oud is drier and more austere. Epic Man helps place the oud-spice Amouage family. Haltane is a looser amberwood comparison, while Dead of Night and Bortnikoff-style ouds locate the raw animalic side. Compared with clean modern ouds, King Blue is much less sanitized.

King Blue is polarizing by design. Admirers praise its audacity, naturalistic oud impression, strong performance, and unusual reverse arc from funk to fruit. They often find the sweet drydown more beautiful than the opening suggests. Critics find the barnyard phase too fecal, too difficult, or too expensive for the eventual amberwood finish. Value sentiment therefore depends on oud tolerance: for experienced oud wearers it can feel compelling; for casual buyers it is a poor blind buy.

Released in 2023 as Opus XV in the rebooted Library Collection, King Blue is sold as a high-concentration EDP. No known reformulations are documented as of 2026. It is not marine or aquatic; the blue concept is conceptual wordplay, not the smell.
