Essence

Search is Amouage’s 2023 attempt to do a citrus cologne the Omani way: stack the brightest possible lemon-lime-mandarin trinity over a base of Royal Green Hojari frankincense, cade tar and bitter guaiac. It belongs to the Odyssey Collection’s Chapter III, Escape, alongside Lineage, Purpose and Guidance. What makes it distinctive is not the citrus - many houses do citrus - but the contrast: a piercing, almost lemon-cleaner-bright opening that doesn’t burn off into clean musks like most fresh fragrances, but instead drops onto a smoky resinous floor that keeps the lemon hovering for hours. It is the Eau Sauvage idea rewritten in incense.

Scent Profile

The opening is uncompromising: lemon and lime hit with the high-frequency zing of furniture polish or a freshly cut peel, joined within seconds by a metallic, slightly leathery mandarin that gives the citrus dimension rather than mere brightness. Many wearers describe a Persian-black-lemon, or Limoo Omani, quality - dried-citrus rind with a musty tang - and that is exactly the effect: the citrus reads as preserved, not juicy. Black pepper and elemi appear inside the first ten minutes, the elemi pulling a curious pine-resin sweetness that some skins amplify into a faintly sweaty register. The transition to the heart, around the 30-to-45-minute mark, is where Hojari frankincense takes over. This is not the cool, churchy frankincense of a classic incense scent; the Omani Boswellia sacra reads peppery, lemony and resinous, so it actually fuses with the citrus rather than smothering it. By the one-hour mark the structure has revealed itself: a cool, bright citrus-incense cloud sitting above a smoky woody base. The drydown, from around three hours on, is where cade oil declares itself - a tarry, almost band-aid-and-birch-pitch smokiness, here cut with vetiver’s earthy bitterness and guaiac’s burnt-pencil smoke. The signature accord is smoked citrus over Hojari resin: lemon zest grated onto a still-warm censer. Search is notably linear after the first hour, holding that shape for the duration. Of the listed pyramid, lemon, frankincense, cade and guaiac are the notes truly perceptible; mandarin and lime fuse into the lemon, elemi only registers on a close sniff, and the black pepper is a structural lift more than a discrete note.

Performance

Projection in the first hour is strong - at least an arm’s length - with the citrus longevity genuinely top-class for a fresh fragrance. After the citrus settles, projection drops to moderate, around thirty to sixty centimetres, and the fragrance becomes a steady, close-skin smoky-citrus halo. The consensus performance read is seven to nine hours on skin, with the smoky woody core holding consistently rather than evolving through dramatic shifts. On clothing - particularly cotton - Search can push past twelve hours, with the smoky base lingering on a scarf or jacket overnight. Heat amplifies both the citrus and the cade smoke; it shines in warm dry climates and feels purpose-built for spring and summer. In cold or humid conditions the citrus collapses faster and the cade can pull astringent. The best application strategy is two sprays only: Search is one of the rare Amouages that does not require restraint to avoid offending, but over-spraying tips the cade into outright tar.

Wearing Context

This is a late-spring-through-early-fall scent, daytime to early evening, best in bright sun and on warm skin, where the citrus reads as a luxury cologne and the smoke as a discreet undertone. It is excellent for the office, travel, brunch and yacht-and-linen settings, and works on a man or woman without skewing either way. It falls flat in winter - the citrus collapse strips the perfume of its tension and you are left with a thin smoky base - so avoid heavy fabric layering in cold months, where the cade can read sour without the citrus halo above it. In social perception, this is a fragrance person’s citrus: non-enthusiasts will read it as either expensive lemon cleaner or as something faintly outdoorsy and smoky. It does not function as a compliment-magnet the way Bleu de Chanel or Aventus do; it earns respect from other enthusiasts and confusion from everyone else.

Comparisons & DNA

The closest critical reference point is the classical citrus-chypre tradition - Chanel Pour Monsieur, Dior Eau Sauvage, Armani Eau Pour Homme. Search shares their structural idea, citrus over a mossy or woody base, but replaces oakmoss with Omani frankincense and cade. Compared with Eau Sauvage, Search is louder, smokier and less floral; one commenter remarks that it needs a touch of hedione to push it into Eau Sauvage Parfum territory. Closer modern siblings include Xerjoff Fiero (a similar smoky lemon, but mossier and more aromatic, less resinous) and Profumum Roma Acqua Viva (cleaner, brighter, no incense). The most direct olfactory cousin is Frederic Malle Cologne Indelebile - both attempt a long-lasting cologne - though Indelebile goes orange-blossom-musk while Search goes incense-cade. Within Amouage’s own catalog, Search is the citrus counterpart to Bracken Man (greener, drier) and the smoky inverse of Beach Hut Man (coconut-driven), and it explicitly belongs to the Odyssey Escape quartet with Lineage, Purpose and Guidance, all built around Hojari frankincense; among them Search is the only true citrus. As of the mid-2020s there is no widely circulated clone of Search - possibly because long-lived natural citrus over Hojari is hard to do cheaply - and it anchors the smoky-citrus niche trend, a wave of frankincense-citrus releases of which it is the loudest and best-aged exemplar.

Reception

Wearer response is positive but polarized. Praise centers on the realism of the citrus, the longevity for a fresh fragrance (genuinely exceptional - citrus pushing four-plus hours is rare), and the unique smoky-lemon contrast. Criticism splits into three camps: those who find it too linear and not Amouage enough, particularly Chong-era loyalists; those who get lemon-cleaner associations from the opening; and those who find the cade-and-elemi base musty or sweaty. The critic Karl Topham, reviewing the full Odyssey Chapter III quartet in February 2023, introduced Search as instantly recognizable as a strong citrus, smoky and woody scent, forthright and unapologetic, singling out the Persian-black-lemon reference as the conceptual hook. One editorial review, framed in classical-music terms, called the base accord the equivalent of the double bass in an ensemble, mobile enough not to overwhelm the composition, and concluded that Search means love. Wearers are more divided, with only a minority of the tracked reviews positive and one critic calling it minimalist to the point of being crass. The blind-buy verdict is a cautious yes for citrus lovers who already understand and enjoy frankincense or cade, and a no for anyone who has not first confirmed they like smoky-medicinal notes in their fresh fragrances. A sample is mandatory; the lemon-cleaner association is real for a meaningful minority.

Versions & Reformulation

This is a single composition with no known reformulations. Search is sold only as a 100 ml EDP at 25-percent oil concentration, with the brand’s stated four-week maceration and four-week maturation. A 10 ml travel-spray quartet (Search with Lineage, Purpose and Guidance) is also available. No extrait variant has been released.

Acquisition Notes

This is niche-luxury: the 100 ml retails around 395 dollars direct from Amouage, and the four-by-10 ml Odyssey travel-spray set runs about 260 dollars. Decants are widely available from the usual split services in the 20-to-28-dollar range for 5 ml, so sampling is easy. Counterfeit prevalence is currently low - Amouage sees far less faking than Creed or Tom Ford. Buy from Amouage, Luckyscent, Bloomingdale’s or Harrods to be sure of authenticity.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Search belongs to The Odyssey Collection’s Chapter III, Escape, formally launched on February 20, 2023 as the second major wave under Renaud Salmon.
  • Salmon, a Belgian formerly of Delvaux and Louis Vuitton, joined Amouage with the unusual title Chief Experience Officer, announced in February 2020, more than eight months after Christopher Chong’s resignation took effect in May 2019.
  • Salmon framed Search and its three siblings as a meditation on Hojari frankincense - specifically the Royal Green Hojari grade that, in his words, represents probably five per cent of production and grows in a very specific area in southern Oman.
  • Each scent in the Escape quartet was tasked with exploring a different facet of frankincense; Search drew the citrus and aromatic facet.
  • The perfumer is Alexis Grugeon, then at Firmenich, the same nose responsible for Amouage’s Opus XV King Blue, and Search is widely cited as his commercial breakthrough at the house.
  • The conceptual hook documented in the brand’s press materials was the Limoo Omani, the Persian dried black lemon, which explains the leathery, aged facet of the lemon in the opening.
  • Search was released alongside Amouage’s broader Wadi Dawkah frankincense-conservation initiative, a partnership with Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism covering a UNESCO World Heritage site in Dhofar - making the Escape quartet the first Amouage releases explicitly tied to that sustainability story. There is no celebrity association and no controversy of note: Search has the lowest drama footprint of any 2023 Amouage release and some of the highest critical respect.
