Essence

A discontinued 2015 release from Roja Dove’s three-piece Tutti Frutti Collection, alongside Sweetie Aoud and Candy Aoud, Fruity Aoud is the berry-forward member: a jammy blackcurrant-raspberry-strawberry medley layered over a heavy resinous, leathery oud base on the characteristic Aoud Collection chassis. Despite the name’s gourmand hint, it is closer to an animalic woody-fruity oriental than to a fruity gourmand. Since its retirement from the line it has become a cult discontinued grail.

Scent Profile

The opening is the most distinctive in the Tutti Frutti trio: a tart, slightly green grapefruit-bergamot blast supported by aromatic artemisia, which gives the first five minutes a dry, almost herbal edge before the fruit lands. The berries arrive within ten minutes, blackcurrant most prominent, then raspberry, then a softer strawberry, and stay perceptible for two to three hours. The blackcurrant reads ripe, jammy and slightly tart rather than as the sharp cassis-bud accent Roja sometimes deploys. Rose, orange blossom and violet sit in the heart as supporting florals but are submerged under the berry impact, with the violet contributing a powdery, slightly soapy texture that makes the fruit read potpourri-like. Notably, the heart smells less floral than the note pyramid suggests. The base is where Fruity Aoud reveals that it is fundamentally an Aoud Collection composition rather than a fruity scent. Agarwood, gurjan balsam, leather, labdanum, olibanum, birch tar, patchouli, oakmoss, amyris, cypriol and a stack of woods build a dense, smoky, slightly fecal animalic base that overlaps significantly with Sweetie Aoud and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The signature accord is the tension between bright jammy berries and skanky-animalic oud-leather, what one reviewer called a tractor-tyre wallop of dark, dank oud with fruit on top. Saffron adds a leathery-medicinal lift, while vanilla, orris and benzoin sweeten and soften the base into something more wearable than pure oud. The evolution is genuine over the first three hours, fruit-forward to fruit-and-oud to oud-and-leather, after which it settles into a long, linear amber-oud skin scent. The violet, orris and most of the woods stay submerged throughout, contributing texture rather than identifiable notes.

Performance

Projection is heavy, three to four feet for the opening hour before dropping to arm’s length by the second. The trail is above average, longevity is ten to fourteen hours on skin and well past a day on clothing. The berry top is fleeting in heat, dying within half an hour above the mid-twenties Celsius, but the base is heat-stable, and in cold weather the resin-leather scaffolding warms beautifully and the fruit reads more like jam than fresh berries. Humidity intensifies the oud’s animalic facets, while dry climates are kinder. One to two sprays is the maximum given the oud density; three will make the wearer audible to a room. Spraying on fabric extends it into next-week territory but loses the fruit, so the optimal wear is a single spray on skin in the late afternoon for an evening out.

Wearing Context

This is cold-weather, evening, formal territory. It thrives where intensity reads as luxury rather than nuisance: winter weddings, the opera, dinners in dim restaurants. It falls flat in heat, where the fruit dies and the oud goes shouty, in offices, where it is too animalic and too distinctive, and on anyone uncomfortable with oud’s stinkier facets. It is unisex in positioning, though the berry-vanilla-rose elements pull it slightly feminine in the West while reading unisex in Gulf contexts. The social read is expensive Arabian oud with a sweet edge, and wearers consistently report being asked whether it is a Middle Eastern fragrance. Because it is discontinued, wearing it now carries a small connoisseur-flex element among collectors who recognize the bottle.

Comparisons & DNA

The two closest siblings are the other Tutti Frutti releases. Candy Aoud, also discontinued, is the banana-pear-apple version of the same formula and tends to be more polarizing because of the banana note, while Sweetie Aoud, still in production, is the patisserie-rose-oud variant and the most popular of the three. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia shares the dense resin-leather-oud base, and Amber Aoud is sweeter, more amber-resinous and less fruit-forward. Outside the house, Mancera Roses Vanille sits in adjacent berry-rose-vanilla territory at a fraction of the price but lacks the oud density, By Kilian Rose Oud is comparable in fruit-rose-oud DNA but cleaner and less animalic, and Montale Black Aoud delivers a louder, simpler rose-oud at a fraction of the cost. For clone hunters, an independent house offers a widely cited interpretation explicitly marketed as a Fruity Aoud take, often named in discussions as the only practical way to get the scent now that the original is gone, and another house offers an oil impression; no budget Arabic dupe has emerged. The collector consensus is that the interpretation captures the spirit but not the depth, since the original’s complexity in the wood-resin base is not fully reproduced.

Reception

Wearer reports leans strongly positive, while the more critical voices focus on value: several wearers argue the launch price outstripped the quality, one stating outright that it is a good fragrance but absolutely not worth the price. The dividing lines are tolerance for the animalic oud base, which some describe as barnyard or fecal, value for money, and similarity to other Aoud Collection releases, since owners of Sweetie or Kingdom of Saudi Arabia find it redundant. As a blind buy the question is moot, since the perfume is discontinued and only the aftermarket exists; the sensible move is to sample from a decanter or try the independent interpretation first. One outlet covered the collection’s launch ahead of a New York preview event, quoting Roja’s stated motivation that, surrounded by indulgence and edible guilty pleasures while working in the Middle East, he noticed that oud lovers were craving something new and creative, so he began playing with combining oud and gourmand elements. No major critic published a dedicated review.

Versions & Reformulation

A single composition, a 50ml parfum, produced from 2015 until it quietly disappeared from the brand’s website and authorized retailers around the end of the 2010s. There was no reformulation and no concentration variant, and the bottle was the standard Aoud Collection presentation with the Tutti Frutti collection’s pale pink-tinted juice.

Acquisition Notes

It is aftermarket only now. Full bottles surface through collector channels, typically asking well above the original retail for an unused 50ml. The decant ecosystem is partially intact, with samples still drawn from original stock, though that will dry up as it depletes, and the independent interpretation is the practical replacement for everyday wear at a small fraction of the aftermarket price.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Roja’s stated intent at the Tutti Frutti launch was that, surrounded by indulgence and edible guilty pleasures while working in the Middle East, he noticed oud lovers craving something new and creative and began experimenting with oud-plus-gourmand. The collection was previewed at a New York event in March 2015 and went on sale in the US that June, with simultaneous availability through Roja’s UK channels.
  • The discontinuation is genuinely lamented in the collector wearers, with multiple wearers mourning that the most valuable of the series is no longer produced, and a sizeable secondary market has grown up around it.
  • Within the trio, Fruity Aoud and Candy Aoud were both retired while Sweetie Aoud survived in the active line.
  • The leading collector theory is that Fruity Aoud and Candy Aoud were cut because of overlap with similar Aoud Collection releases and slower sales relative to Sweetie, though no official statement was issued.
  • There are no celebrity associations or viral moments; its cult status is purely within the enthusiast wearers.
