Roja Dove — The Oud
Essence
The Oud is a 2023 entry in Roja Dove’s Pierre de Velay Collection, an exclusive line developed at his Haute Parfumerie in London’s Burlington Arcade and inspired, by Roja’s telling, by a notebook of vintage perfume formulae he discovered in a market in the South of France. It is his reframing of contemporary Gulf perfumery as dazzling, modern, and full of excitement rather than dark and traditional: a fresh, floral, rose-and-oud parfum in which the oud reads more as an accord than a forward Hindi-style note. Reception has been polarised, partly over its boutique pricing and partly over how much actual oud people perceive in it.
Scent Profile
The opening is short but distinct. Bergamot and mandarin orange give a bright, sparkly citrus lift, sweeter and more orange-toned than the usual Roja bergamot blast, joined by a clean, slightly green geranium that immediately begins pivoting toward rose. The citrus burns off within a few minutes, and geranium is the bridge into the floral heart. The heart is intensely floral. Rose is the most prominent voice, fresh, sweet, and summery rather than the heavy Taif rose Roja uses elsewhere. Ylang-ylang is the second-strongest floral, adding a creamy, faintly banana-tinged richness, while magnolia plays an almost transparent supporting role and jasmine fills out the bouquet without going indolic. Clove appears here, adding a faint warm-spice prickle that carries through into the base. The middle reads as a polished, modern rose-floral with a soft spice undercurrent, closer to a refined floral parfum than to a traditional oud composition. The drydown is where the oud accord finally asserts itself, though never aggressively. It resolves into a polished, Western-clean oud, leathery and faintly smoky but not barnyard. Saffron adds the slight medicinal-leather edge characteristic of Roja’s oud creations, patchouli and clove give earthy warmth, frankincense and styrax add a thin smokiness, orris brings a powdery refinement, and labdanum and benzoin round the base with amber warmth. By the fifth hour and beyond it is a dry, refined oud-rose-clove skin scent with a slight smoky-incense halo. The signature accord is rose and clove and clean oud over saffron and dry resins, a fresh, summery oud rather than a dark winter one, and it is widely compared to Roja UAE as a lighter, more floral cousin.
Performance
Projection is moderate to strong in the first couple of hours, often described as excellent, with a little going a long way. Sillage carries a comfortable aura of roughly 50 to 80 cm for several hours before settling close to the skin. Longevity is excellent, typically eight to twelve hours on skin for a parfum-strength Roja, with cloth retention pushing well beyond a day. Heat amplifies the rose and floral middle, while cold favours the oud-clove base. It is one of the more climate-versatile Rojas, working in warmer weather in a way that is unusual for an oud-classified parfum. Two to three sprays is the consensus dose, since over-spraying makes the floral heart cloying.
Wearing Context
Autumn and winter are the obvious seasons, but the surprise is that it also wears well in spring and warmer climates thanks to its floral lightness and absence of true dark-oud weight. Both daytime and evening work: it is formal enough for dressy occasions, refined enough for office wear in oud-tolerant environments, and rich enough for the evening. It is not a club, sport, or beach scent. It wears unisex, reading slightly more feminine on first sniff from the rose-clove-oud register and more unisex in the drydown, and it comes across as confident, polished, and expensive without being aggressive, closer to a luxury floral with oud depth than to a traditional Gulf oud.
Comparisons & DNA
The most-cited internal comparison is Roja UAE; many wearers describe The Oud as essentially UAE with more florals and less dark resin. Roja Taif Aoud is closer in rose-dominance but more Taif-specific, while Roja Aoud is the heavier, more traditional take. Tom Ford Oud Wood is leaner and less floral, and Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold is the most direct external rose-oud comparison at a far lower price. Initio Atomic Rose and Parfums de Marly Athalia sit in adjacent rose-leather territory. Given its recency and boutique-exclusive status, there is no widely recognised cheaper clone of this specific entry. Detractors push back on the oud-accord status, with some openly questioning the value of paying close to boutique-luxury prices for a fragrance whose oud is debated, and others noting its similarity to other Roja rose-ouds, UAE in particular. No major critic deep-dive has surfaced to date. As a blind buy it is not advisable: this is a parfum at boutique-exclusive pricing, so sampling first is essential.

The Oud is a single composition with no flankers or concentration variants. It is part of the Pierre de Velay Collection, exclusive to the Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie, sold in a 100 ml parfum with 10 ml atomisers also available. The collection spans both numbered and named entries, and The Oud was launched in 2023 as part of a New Discovery Collection sampler set alongside several of its siblings.

This sits in the ultra-luxury, boutique-exclusive tier, with the 100 ml parfum priced accordingly and 10 ml atomisers offering the easiest entry point. It is sold exclusively through the Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie and the brand’s perfumery online, rather than at general Roja retailers, so there is little grey-market or discounter pricing and it stays close to its recommended retail price.
