Essence

Parfum De La Nuit No 3 (2015) is “The Exotic” of Roja’s original Prestige trilogy, and the only one to survive the 2024-2025 discontinuation - its composition was reintroduced in 2025 under the streamlined name “Parfum De La Nuit.” It is a floral-oriental built around rose and artemisia, over a deeply spiced, woody-resinous base of leather, incense, cumin, saffron, gurjun balsam, cardamom, labdanum, cypriol, sandalwood, cedar, guaiac wood, and patchouli. What sets it apart, both in Roja’s catalog and in the wider rose-oud-saffron canon, is its commitment to dry leather over sweet rose, producing something more masculine and far less candy-pretty than most modern rose ouds.

Scent Profile

The first ten to twenty minutes open with bergamot quickly giving way to artemisia’s bitter, aromatic green sharpness, with rose and labdanum rising underneath. Within fifteen minutes it reads unambiguously as a dark rose-amber with leather already on the edges. In the heart, from about one to three hours, rose becomes the most perceptible single note - but never candied or jammy. It is a dry, slightly powdery rose, supported by labdanum’s leathery-balsamic depth, saffron’s rubbery-medicinal facet, and a small but detectable cumin note that lends the warm-skin sensuality the trilogy is known for, with cardamom adding soft green spice and gurjun balsam resinous warmth. The critic Sebastian Jara described the heart as a “rose, labdanum, leather and earthy saffron” core, noting that it is “not at all a rosy scent - it’s only a supportive note.” Wearers consistently find it drier and less rose-forward than the notes list would suggest; the leather and resins dominate. From three hours on, the deep base reveals itself: leather, frankincense, amber, benzoin, styrax, labdanum, cypriol, sandalwood, cedar, juniper, amyris, guaiac, and patchouli. Frankincense gives a smoky, meditative facet, styrax a slightly burnt-sweet resinous gesture, cypriol an earthy-mossy depth, and sandalwood a warm-skin texture. The leather stays the dominant base note throughout, supported by the resins and lifted by the incense. The second half is more linear than evolving, the rose and saffron drifting into the background while the leather-resin signature holds for hours.

Performance

Projection is strong for the first three hours and moderate thereafter; sillage fills a small room early and settles to an intimate aura by hour four. Longevity runs ten to fourteen hours on skin and three or more days on clothing. Heat can make the leather and resins feel heavy, so apply sparingly when it is warm; cold weather is where it shines, as a fundamentally cold-weather, formal-evening composition. Humidity intensifies the cumin-skin facet, which some find sensual and others find too animalic. Two sprays to the chest and inner collar is the sweet spot.

Wearing Context

This is an autumn-and-winter, evening fragrance for most wearers, with daytime wear viable only in deep cold. It suits formal dinners, evening galas, the opera, candlelit interiors, and late-night intimacy, and it fails in the office, in summer daytime, and in casual settings. The social read is mature and strongly luxury-coded, with the rose-leather pairing landing as unisex-leaning-masculine. One wearer called it best on men, with very attractive leather - though it is officially unisex and many women wear it beautifully.

Comparisons & DNA

The most direct comparison is the 2025 reissue, simply called Parfum De La Nuit, which reintroduces this exact composition. Within Roja’s catalog, No 3 shares architecture with Sweetie Aoud (a leather-inflected gourmand accord) and Amber Aoud (the rose-resin core), while Pierre de Velay No 1 shares the saffron-leather-rose-resin DNA but swaps in oud and adds white florals. Outside the house, the closest cousins are Tom Ford Noir de Noir (rose-oud-leather, the comparison wearers cite most often), Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady (rose-resin-patchouli), and Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood (rose-amber-leather); Roja’s own Fetish Pour Homme is a sweeter, more vanillic relative, and Montale’s rose-ouds are coarser and more synthetic. One wearer summed it up neatly: “Roja’s take on the quintessential oud-vanilla-rose combo - Middle Eastern perfume for Westerners.” No notable budget clone exists.

Reception

This is the most consistently praised of the three. Wearers call it a beautiful, sweet, smoky, dry-leather fragrance, “sex in a bottle,” a spicy showpiece, and one of Roja’s best, with criticism aimed almost entirely at the price. The most authoritative critical voice is Sebastian Jara, who framed it around an exotic, timeless glamour and said it would have made his personal top-ten Roja list. With the 2025 reissue now available, blind-buying the original is less necessary, but for anyone who already loves dark rose-leather orientals this is a cautious yes - sample first, given the cost.

Versions & Reformulation

The 2015 release was reissued in 2025 under the streamlined name Parfum De La Nuit, with the composition confirmed as continued. Side-by-side accounts describe the 2025 batch as essentially identical, some noting a slightly altered opening and others claiming full identity. The original 2015 bottles are now legacy stock and command secondary-market premiums, particularly the original faceted-stopper presentation; the new release uses the updated Prestige Collection design with its studded violet-crystal cap.

Acquisition Notes

Historic retail from 2015 to 2024 sat in Roja’s Prestige tier, around 1,400 USD for 100ml Parfum. The name is now discontinued, with the 2025 Parfum De La Nuit serving as the in-production substitute at a near-identical price. Original bottles command premiums on the secondary market, and decants are available in 2ml to 10ml sizes. For the current formula, buy the 2025 release direct from Roja; for the original, buy only from sellers you trust.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Roja Dove’s stated intent for No 3 was: “Exotic and mysterious, this enticing fragrance strips you of your inhibitions as it tempts you to experience the allure of the unknown.”
  • He conceived the whole trilogy in response to a journalist calling him “the pornographer of perfumery,” a label he embraced as creative fuel, and gave each entry a theme - No 1 “The Predator,” No 2 “The Seducer,” No 3 “The Exotic.”
  • A Roja representative has described labdanum amber as the unifying ingredient across all three, with Dove envisioning “the amber color of the sky just as the sun sets” as each one’s aura.
  • The 2025 reissue confirms No 3 as the trilogy’s most commercially successful composition, and that reintroduction became the most talked-about moment in its history, prompting plenty of debate over whether it represented genuine continuity or simply repackaging.
