Essence

Unspoken, from 2007, is the chypre entry in Roja Dove’s founding Trilogy, alongside Scandal and Enslaved. It is a dense, opulent floral chypre built on a classical aldehydic top, a heady jasmine-and-white-floral heart, and a rich resinous base of orris, sandalwood, oakmoss, labdanum, amber, ginger, vanilla, vetiver, and patchouli. Roja describes it as a classic chypre structure with an unexpected overdose of jasmine on top. It was pulled from broad distribution but remains available at a handful of boutiques, and was re-released in 2017 as part of his Heritage Collection. It is one of the most beloved and most-lamented entries in his catalogue.

Scent Profile

The opening is glittering and unmistakably classical. Aldehydes are the headline, sparkling, soapy, almost effervescent, in the tradition of the great mid-century florals. Bergamot brings a citrus lift, and lavender is present but quieter than expected, more a grounding herbal note than a forward voice. The effect is vintage-feeling without being dated: the aldehydes have mid-century shimmer while the structure feels modern. The heart is what defines Unspoken. Jasmine is the dominant voice, heady, slightly indolic, and very rich, with ylang-ylang adding creamy, banana-and-rubber tropical density, neroli bringing a sunny orange-blossom brightness, and rose a sweet floral counterweight. The white-floral overdose is the deliberate centrepiece, and in Roja’s own words he created a classic chypre structure and added an unexpected overdose of jasmine on top. That density is consistently called out as the composition’s surprise, especially over a chypre frame where florals usually play a supporting role. Ginger appears as a faint, sometimes raspy, warm-spice undertone. The drydown reveals the chypre architecture. Oakmoss provides the green-bitter spine, though muted almost to a murmur rather than the loud moss of vintage chypres. Orris root is prominent, powdery and faintly carrot-like, while labdanum gives a leathery warmth and benzoin-like resins add ambery depth. Sandalwood is the base centrepiece, creamy and smooth with a Mysore-style character, and patchouli and vetiver round out the earthiness. A touch of vanilla adds a slight oriental tilt that pulls the composition toward Mitsouko-meets-Shalimar territory, with cedar adding dry wood. By the fifth hour and beyond it is a powdery, vanillic, slightly resinous, moss-and-iris skin scent. The signature accord is aldehydic jasmine and white florals over an orris-sandalwood-vanilla-moss base, Roja’s modern Mitsouko with a jasmine overdose, and the evolution from aldehydic shimmer to indolic floral heart to powdery-amber base is genuine.

Performance

Performance is modest to moderate by Roja standards, and this is where many admirers express disappointment given the price. Projection is moderate in the first hour or two, settling closer to skin by the fourth hour, and sillage is intimate rather than booming, forming an arm’s-length aura for the first few hours before pulling close. Longevity runs six to eight hours on skin for many, a little longer for high-affinity wearers, with cloth retention pushing past a day. Heat thins the aldehydes and the moss while cold favours the resins, so temperate weather suits it best. Three sprays to the neck and chest is typical, since over-spraying can make the indolic jasmine overwhelming. Some wearers find the lighter concentration performs better on certain skins, an unusual reversal.

Wearing Context

This is for autumn, winter, and cool spring evenings, dressy occasions, elegant dinners, and business-formal settings in chypre-friendly environments. Daytime works for a wearer comfortable with a vintage-glamour register, but it is the wrong choice for casual day, the beach, the gym, sport, or hot, humid weather. It reads predominantly feminine in social perception, though plenty of men wear it happily and the house markets it as suitable for chypre-friendly men. It skews mature, sophisticated, and old-money, closer to the classical chypre-floral demographic than to the modern oud-and-vanilla niche audience; one apt description casts it as liquid strength for a woman making it in a man’s world.

Comparisons & DNA

Guerlain Mitsouko is the principal DNA reference; Roja’s Guerlain background shows through in Unspoken’s chypre construction, and many wearers simply call it Mitsouko with a jasmine overdose. Hermès Calèche is the second-most-invoked classical reference, and Chanel No. 19 sits adjacent on the green-floral-chypre axis, with Guerlain Vol de Nuit in the same architectural neighbourhood. Within Roja’s own line, the later Chypré Extraordinaire is a fruitier, denser, more peach-and-plum-led take on the family, while Unspoken is purer in its white-floral-jasmine focus; Haute Luxe shares the orris-amber-base DNA, and Enslaved and the original Scandal are its Trilogy siblings, the oriental and floral respectively. Puredistance M, which Roja also created, sits adjacent in the powdery-floral-orris register though more leather-led, and Miller Harris L’Air de Rien occupies adjacent powdery-vintage territory. There is no widely cited cheaper clone of Unspoken specifically. Lineage-wise, it is one of three founding scents that established Roja Parfums as a commercial line and is the chypre archetype for the rest of the catalogue.

Reception

Reception is one of strong love among chypre fans tempered by frustration over performance and limited distribution. It is polarising but has devoted defenders, and chypre-enthusiast circles have long cited it as one of the great modern chypres, with one effusive published review describing it as liquid strength for a woman making it in a man’s world. Common praise centers on the blending, the orris-jasmine-sandalwood balance, the modernised-vintage feel, and its suitability as a signature scent for chypre lovers. Common criticism targets the modest performance for the price, the limited distribution since it left broad retail, and an occasional sense from some wearers that the chypre and oriental elements feel dense or chaotic together. As a blind buy it is advisable only at a substantial discount; sampling first is wise, especially given how restricted it now is.

Versions & Reformulation

Originally launched in 2007 as part of the founding Trilogy, Unspoken has existed in both parfum and a lighter concentration. In an interview, Roja explicitly confirmed the reason for its narrowed distribution: it is still made and can still be bought, but only at a couple of his own retail points, and the reason was simply that, while he did not want to upset anyone, not enough people were buying it, so he wanted to be certain that those who loved it could still get it. The scent was re-released in 2017 as part of his Heritage Collection, restoring slightly broader availability. Wearer reports holds that the lighter concentration feels a little more spacious and airier, while the parfum is denser and longer-lasting, and no major formulation changes beyond presentation updates are publicly reported, though some discussion suggests later production may differ slightly from the earliest batches.

Acquisition Notes

This sits in the ultra-luxury, restricted-distribution tier, currently available chiefly through the brand’s own boutiques and website, having been deliberately removed from broader stockists; the 2017 Heritage Collection re-release restored some availability. It has existed in both parfum and a lighter concentration at full luxury pricing, and decant availability is more limited than for Roja’s broadly distributed releases. The most reliable path is to sample at one of the boutiques or, if buying online, to source directly from the brand.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Unspoken is one of the three founding fragrances of Roja Parfums, launched in 2007 as part of a Trilogy intended to cover the three major fragrance families, Scandal for floral, Unspoken for chypre, and Enslaved for oriental.
  • Roja’s stated intent for it is romantic: whose heart does not skip a beat when someone special catches our eye, a glance so expressive without a single word, and perfume can express this better than anything else, which is why he created a classic chypre structure and added an unexpected overdose of jasmine on top.
  • In a later interview he candidly confirmed the commercial reason for the narrowed distribution, that people did not buy it, while preserving access for fans.
  • One published writer recalled buying her first bottle in 2009, before it reached the United States, and being immediately reminded of the Hermès Calèche her mother wore, capturing the Calèche-Mitsouko axis Unspoken sits between.
  • It is widely regarded by Roja collectors as one of his most accomplished compositions and one of the genuine regrets of the modern chypre genre.
  • It has no major celebrity association or viral moment; its cultural weight is enthusiast and chypre-revival driven, and its role in the catalogue is as the chypre exemplar that the later, more opulent Chypré Extraordinaire was designed to expand upon.
