Essence

A 2014 Bergdorf Goodman exclusive, this masculine parfum was created to embody the men’s department at the iconic Fifth Avenue store. Goodman’s is a citrus-floral-woody chypre with a mildly animalic drydown: bright bergamot and mandarin up top, a jasmine-neroli heart, and a smoky vetiver-castoreum-cedar-cinnamon base. It launched alongside its feminine counterpart as a paired commission celebrating the store. Among Roja’s exclusives it sits at the more restrained, gentlemanly end of the catalogue.

Scent Profile

The opening is a clean, well-built citrus chord, bergamot dominant and mandarin orange supporting, and the citrus lasts a real ten to fifteen minutes rather than the typical brief Roja burst. Within twenty minutes the heart’s white florals surface: jasmine is the most prominent and gives the perfume a slightly powdered, polished feel, neroli adds an orange-blossom-honeyed brightness, and ylang-ylang and rose support from beneath. The transition from citrus to floral is one of the perfume’s more elegant moves and the passage enthusiasts highlight most, one wearer describing the lush warmth of the jasmine heart as like sinking into deep-piled carpet. The base is where Goodman’s becomes interesting, and where opinion splits. Vetiver is the dominant base note, drawn in Roja’s preferred earthy-smoky-leathery style rather than the contemporary green-fresh interpretation. Olibanum and patchouli build a warm-resinous frame, castoreum and civet sit at low levels and contribute a discreet animalic warmth that keeps the perfume from going generically luxurious, coriander and cardamom give a dry-spicy lift, cedar anchors the woods, and cinnamon adds an unexpected warming sweetness that links the heart to the base. The signature accord is the citrus-jasmine-vetiver-incense interlock. It evolves genuinely over four to six hours, from bright citrus to floral-resinous to smoky-woody with a mild animalic warmth, with linearity setting in around the third hour. The citrus, jasmine, vetiver and spicy-incense warmth come through clearly, while the rose, ylang and the castoreum-civet stay submerged, felt more than named.

Performance

Projection is moderate and never aggressive. Roja designed Goodman’s as a refined office and evening fragrance and it behaves accordingly, an arm’s-length cloud for the first two hours and close to the skin afterward, with a restrained trail. Longevity is its strongest metric, a reliable eight to twelve hours on skin and well over a day on wool, with one wearer reporting it still perceptible in the room six hours in and on the skin past ten. It handles all climates well, since the citrus survives heat better than most Roja releases thanks to the structured floral-vetiver underlay, and the smoky-resinous base reads well in the cold. Two to three sprays is plenty, ideally on skin rather than clothing, where the vetiver-incense base reads cleaner on warm skin.

Wearing Context

It is viable all year with a slight lean toward autumn and spring. Its strongest contexts are formal business, smart-casual dinners, weddings, and anywhere a polished masculine signature is wanted; it is widely described as a suit fragrance, with one wearer joking that if you are not wearing a suit you have no reason to wear it. It falls flat as a casual, club or gym scent, and for anyone wanting Roja’s louder, sweeter signature. It is stated masculine and reads strongly masculine in practice, with the citrus-vetiver-incense profile giving no feminine drift. The social read is classy old-school cologne rather than modern niche, and wearers report being asked whether it is Creed Green Irish Tweed or a vintage Guerlain Vetiver, with the Roja branding lifting the perceived register above where the bare smell might place it.

Comparisons & DNA

Within Roja’s catalogue, Vetiver Extrait is the closest sibling, the same vetiver-citrus-resin DNA in a more vetiver-forward arrangement, while Scandal Pour Homme is sharper, more aldehydic-fougere and more aggressive, and Enigma Pour Homme is sweeter and more tobacco-amber-resin. The Semi-Bespoke 10 has been reported as sharing the aromatic-woody direction. Outside the house, Creed Green Irish Tweed is the obvious comparison, with one wearer calling Goodman’s effectively a fine-tuning of it, the dry-citrus-woods skeleton similar but with Goodman’s adding the warmth and jasmine that GIT lacks. Tom Ford Tuscan Leather is the more aggressive leather alternative, Goodman’s softer and more floral, while Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire delivers the vetiver-citrus DNA more cleanly and at lower cost, and a vintage Guerlain Vetiver is the classic reference Roja was working from. For clone hunters, there is no widely recognized direct dupe, but because the profile sits so close to Green Irish Tweed, the usual GIT clones function as approximate substitutes at vastly lower price, though none captures Goodman’s specific floral-castoreum warmth.

Reception

Reception is polarized to a degree unusual for Roja. The positive camp is substantial, describing it as a refined classic and one of the few Roja exclusives that genuinely feels worth its price. The negative camp was led by one prominent critic who delivered among the most pointed takedowns of any Roja release, finding that it evoked neither the store nor luxurious richness and was a deeply disappointing release by the standards he held for the house, arguing it was not good enough to justify its price in character, development or quality, that it devolved quickly into a simplistic, generic bouquet, and that the house’s usual graceful elegance and seamless blending were absent, the whole thing feeling clumsy and rough. That critic speculated the perfume may have suffered from Roja’s heavy 2014 release schedule. The dividing lines are whether the price-to-luxury ratio holds, whether it meets Roja’s own house standard, and its similarity to widely available cheaper alternatives in the citrus-vetiver genre. Other coverage was warmer, praising Roja’s use of fine materials and recommending it as a luxurious complement to the Bergdorf institution. As a blind buy it is hard to recommend at full retail given that critique and the genre’s strong cheaper alternatives, so a sample first is the wise move.

Versions & Reformulation

A single composition, a 50ml parfum, since 2014. In 2023 Bergdorf Goodman commissioned a separate limited-edition fragrance for the store’s tenth anniversary in a floral-chypre format with a very small production run; that is a distinct release, not a reformulation, and the original Goodman’s remains in production.

Acquisition Notes

It launched around the mid-500s in US dollars for the 50ml parfum as a Bergdorf exclusive, and current pricing sits in roughly the same band. Originally available only at the Fifth Avenue store, it is now sold globally through Roja’s own channels, and the decant ecosystem is solid, with small samples widely available, which is the sensible way to test it before committing.

Notable Facts & Lore

  • Roja’s stated intent at launch was that, asked to create a fragrance for the men’s home of the world-famous store, he tried to capture its special mix of sophistication, excitement and pure luxury, hoping Goodman’s would deliver all the hallmarks of the store: exclusive, refined and very New York.
  • It launched in autumn 2014 as one half of a paired commission, with the feminine counterpart following that November, and Roja appeared at Bergdorf Goodman in December 2014 to sign customers’ bottles.
  • The launch coincided with Roja’s broader US arrival through Bergdorf Goodman in 2013 and 2014, which critic Michelyn Camen acknowledged with a best-buzz nod as the British arrived, and with his appointment as a creative ambassador for a British cultural campaign in 2013, the period of his most aggressive US push.
  • There are no celebrity-wearer associations.
  • The most-quoted moment in the perfume’s reception history remains that prominent negative review and the subsequent debate over whether Roja’s 2014 release pace had outrun his quality control, a discussion that has resurfaced repeatedly in the wider conversation about authorship at the house.
