Roja Dove — Parfum De La Nuit
Essence
Parfum De La Nuit (2025) is, by broad consensus, the reintroduced composition of the discontinued Parfum De La Nuit No. 3 (2015), brought back under a streamlined name. Marketed as a “forbidden fragrance” built to celebrate leather, it is a rich oriental anchored by rose de Mai and labdanum over a deeply spiced, woody, resinous base. Its place in the current Roja line is unusual: it is the surviving leg of the original Prestige trilogy, the only one of the three Parfum De La Nuit compositions carried forward after No. 1 and No. 2 were discontinued.
Scent Profile
The first ten to twenty minutes open on bergamot lifted by the bitter-aromatic green of artemisia. The bergamot fades within minutes; the artemisia lingers a little longer, lending an almost herbal-medicinal sharpness that frames the scent as serious rather than welcoming. Almost at once the heart begins to surface, and within fifteen minutes this is unambiguously a dark rose-amber. Through the first three hours, rose de Mai becomes the most perceptible note - sweet but never candied - supported by labdanum’s leathery-balsamic depth and a generous dose of saffron, whose slightly rubbery, faintly medicinal facet is familiar from Roja’s other rose-saffron work. Cistus (the rockrose that yields labdanum) reinforces that balsamic reading. The cumin listed in the base shows up not as curry spice but as a subtle warm-skin musk, sharper on warm skin types, while cardamom adds a soft green lift. From around three hours, the dense base reveals itself: amyris, frankincense, leather, styrax, patchouli, ambergris, benzoin, gurjun balsam, cedar, cypriol, guaiac, juniper, and sandalwood. Leather dominates, smoothed by the resins and lightly smoked by frankincense and styrax. West Indian sandalwood supplies a warm-skin texture; cedar and guaiac add dry structure; patchouli and cypriol bring an earthy, chypre-adjacent weight; and ambergris lends a salty-mineral facet that keeps the whole thing from turning heavy. This is a more linear than evolving scent - once the rose-leather-saffron heart sets in, it holds for hours, with only the balance between leather and rose shifting slowly.
Performance
Projection is strong for the first three hours and stays noticeable for six to eight. Sillage fills a small room early on, then contracts to an intimate aura by about hour four. Skin longevity is generally ten to twelve hours, with some wearers reporting as long as fifteen; on clothing it can last two to three days. In heat the leather and resins bloom but can turn heavy fast, so a light hand helps, while in the cold it truly shines - this is fundamentally a cold-weather fragrance. Humidity brings out the cumin-skin facet. Two sprays is plenty; overspraying is the most common mistake and turns it into a sledgehammer.
Wearing Context
Strictly autumn and winter, strictly evening. Daytime wear is possible in deep cold but reads as overdressed before sunset. It belongs at formal dinners, the opera, evening galas, late-night dates, and candlelit interiors, and falls flat in offices, in spring and summer daytime heat, and in casual settings. The social read is mature, masculine-leaning unisex, and strongly luxury-coded - people will register it as “very expensive” without being able to say why. Roja’s own framing of it as an “evening secret weapon” matches how wearers describe it.
Comparisons & DNA
The clearest reference point is Roja’s own Parfum De La Nuit No. 3 (2015), whose composition this release reintroduces. Side-by-side accounts are mixed: some owners of both call them identical, while others detect a slightly stripped-down opening with a touch less rose freshness, even as they agree the final drydown is essentially the same. Within Roja’s catalog, Sweetie Aoud shares the dark patisserie-amber DNA, Amber Aoud the rose-resin core, and Enigma the leather-tobacco architecture. Outside the house, Tom Ford Tobacco Oud and Chanel Le Lion are the most-cited cousins in the leather-amber-spice register, with Frédéric Malle Portrait of a Lady (rose-resin-patchouli) sitting in nearby territory and Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777 Khôl de Bahreïn and Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood as more tangential relatives. No widely recognized budget clone of this composition has emerged yet.
Reception
Reception is positive on quality and polarized on everything else. Those who love dark, resinous leather-rose orientals tend to rate it very highly. The cynicism, though, is loud: many wearers read the 2025 release as a marketing rebrand meant to recapture revenue lost when No. 3 was discontinued, at a nearly unchanged price. Two debates dominate the conversation - whether this version is truly identical to No. 3, and whether the price can be justified at all. The composition itself, under its earlier name, drew warm critical attention; Roja Dove describes the current release as “an olfactive secret weapon,” writing that “with its ability to mimic the feeling of warm skin, West Indian Sandalwood melts into the sumptuous spice tones of precious Saffron, which turns up the heat. The cool sweetness of Rose de Mai is transformed into something decadent and inviting.” If No. 3 was already a known love, this is a safe buy at a near-identical formula; otherwise, sample first.
Versions & Reformulation
Parfum De La Nuit (2025) is the reformulated continuation of Parfum De La Nuit No. 3 (2015), with the composition reported as unchanged or nearly so. The bottle has been refreshed with the studded violet-crystal cap of the current Prestige Collection. Some wearers detect a slightly more citrus-forward opening and a slightly less complex rose in the new batch compared with older No. 3 bottles, though whether that reflects genuine reformulation or simple batch variation is unresolved. The earlier 2015-2024 No. 3 bottles are now discontinued and trade on the secondary market.
