Roja Dove — Manhattan Eau de Parfum
Essence
Manhattan Eau de Parfum is the unlimited, more affordable reissue of Roja Dove’s strictly limited 2021 Manhattan Parfum - the same DNA in a brighter delivery, with less depth and roughly half the price. Within a year of launch it became Roja’s most commercially successful tobacco-vanilla, functioning as the house’s answer to Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille in the accessible niche tier. On paper it is identical to the Parfum, but in wear the EDP is markedly more transparent, with more pronounced lavender on the opening and noticeably better day-one projection, traded against overall density and longevity.
Scent Profile
The opening is the most divergent phase between the two versions. The EDP’s bergamot-lavender-basil top is noticeably brighter and more aromatic, with the lavender carrying real lift before being folded into the heart. Where the Parfum collapses into its base within ten to fifteen minutes, the EDP keeps a more conventional top phase of twenty to thirty minutes, the citrus and lavender genuinely perceptible throughout. Through the first three hours the heart is coconut, heliotrope, violet and jasmine, all reading slightly more transparent than in the Parfum. The coconut is the standout here - drier and more natural than tropical - with the heliotrope supplying the cherry-pie cushion Roja explicitly intended. Rose de Mai and jasmine de Grasse are technically present but very recessed; one wearer summed up the heart as vanilla, tobacco, heliotrope, coconut and a boozy touch, with a light menthol note, likely the pine, threading the bridge. From three hours onward the EDP settles into the tobacco-vanilla-cedar core, where it converges most with the Parfum. Pine and tobacco stay the through-line while vanilla, benzoin and patchouli build the cushioning base. A side-by-side comparison of the two concentrations concluded the EDP is brighter, clearer, softer and more immediately pleasing, while the Parfum is darker, fuller, denser and more captivating. The signature accord in both is the tobacco-coconut-vanilla triangle with a pine accent - the EDP delivers it more fluently for everyday wear, the Parfum with more atmosphere.
Performance
Projection opens strong, within a metre or two for the first half hour, then drops faster than the Parfum. Sillage stays good in motion for several hours; longevity runs six to eight hours on skin with extended persistence on clothing, where overnight traces are common. Performance scales with temperature, better in cold than heat: in dry winter air the lavender and pine sing, while humidity amplifies the sweetness and can make it slightly cloying. Three to four sprays is the sweet spot - under-sprayed it neuters the tobacco, over-sprayed it turns the coconut-vanilla cloying - applied to the chest and the back of the neck. The EDP is somewhat more forgiving of a liberal hand than the Parfum.
Wearing Context
Year-round in temperate climates, autumn and winter in colder ones. This is the versatile version: it works for the office (just), evening, dates, casual dinners and formal occasions, and its brighter opening makes it more daytime-wearable than the Parfum. Many wearers treat it as their daily-driver tobacco fragrance. The social read is unisex-leaning-masculine, mature and well-dressed - closer to the consultant on his second Old Fashioned than the young man at the club. It falls flat in athletic and outdoor-summer contexts.
Comparisons & DNA
The constant reference point is Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille - Manhattan EDP is Tobacco Vanille for people who find Tobacco Vanille too dense, too sharp or too dated. Parfums de Marly Carlisle, Bortnikoff Lothair, Aramis Tobacco Reserve and Mancera Red Tobacco all sit in the same sweet-tobacco-vanilla pocket, and enthusiasts consistently rank Manhattan EDP as the smoothest of the group, if not the most distinctive. Within Roja’s own catalogue, Enigma Pour Homme swaps tobacco for boozy cognac over a similar base, Burlington 1819 shares the size and price tier with a different profile, and the rare Parfum version of Manhattan itself is the natural sibling. For cheaper alternatives, several mass-niche sweet-spiced-tobacco scents sit in the broader family at a small fraction of the price and serve as credible substitutes for casual wear. As a piece of lineage, the EDP confirmed Roja’s 2022 pivot toward a more accessible tier: at its launch price it was one of the cheaper Roja parfumerie products, undercutting the house’s standard pricing and marking the moment it began serving the accessible niche tier in earnest.
Reception
Reception is broadly positive, carrying the same caveats as the Parfum - price, modest projection and a perceived lack of originality. One frequent verdict calls it a perfect personal fragrance, a gorgeously blended tapestry of favorite notes that creates a warm, intoxicating blend. Skeptics echo the Parfum’s “good but not the price” line, judging it good but not quite worth it when Tobacco Vanille exists at a similar cost. Critic Michelyn Camen offered the most generous read, framing it as the spirit of Manhattan distilled into a unique olfactory art-piece, while at least one reviewer dismissed it as derivative. The recurring points of debate: whether it is different enough from Tobacco Vanille to justify the price, whether the coconut is a feature or a flaw, and whether the modest projection earns the Roja name. The honest verdict is a cautious yes if you do not already own Tobacco Vanille and want a smoother, more polished sweet-tobacco; otherwise sample first.
Versions & Reformulation
Manhattan EDP (2022) is the only commercially available Manhattan as of 2026, the brand having confirmed the Parfum will not return, and it has not itself been reformulated. The relationship between the two is the whole point of interest: the same notes on paper, materially different in wear. The Parfum is denser and longer-lasting, with a slightly scratchier undertone and clearer base development; the EDP is brighter and more transparent, with more lavender, less depth and better daytime versatility. Most owners of both end up wearing the EDP more often, with the Parfum becoming the collector piece - as one wearer put it, the two smell more or less identical, the EDP just a touch lighter and fresher.
Acquisition Notes
This sits in the niche-luxury tier, sold in a single 100ml size. It is stocked by Roja Dove directly and by the major luxury retailers, and turns up at significant discount through the usual online discounters, where it becomes one of the cheaper authentic Roja entry points. A healthy decant market also makes samples easy to find. Buying from a discounter with a return policy is sensible; an unknown marketplace seller is best avoided.
Notable Facts & Lore
- Manhattan EDP exists because the 2021 Parfum sold out in days, secondary-market prices exploded, and Roja faced sustained pressure from his customer base for an unlimited reissue.
- The 2022 launch was framed as making the composition accessible while preserving the limited-edition prestige of the Parfum - a move that satisfied most fans and irritated the collectors who had paid full price for the original.
- The “American cherry pie” framing carries over into the EDP’s own copy, which describes an addictive sweetness counterpointing the base in a playful nod to the dessert.
- From 2023 onward it became one of the canonical “if you only buy one Roja, buy this” recommendations in wearer reports, displacing Enigma Pour Homme as the default Roja entry point for buyers who do not want a chypre.
- The frequent pairing of the scent with the Manhattan cocktail and a gilded-age, old-fashioned-bar imagery has been widely echoed, and the EDP became a signature of the “old money” aesthetic micro-trend in late 2023, which helped it sell out at several authorised retailers.
